Building OrielOS in public. An open source Linux desktop for dev/gaming. / /

[Nath @BuiltByNath]

I've recently started working on OrielOS, a passion project I'm hoping to one day run full time on my own machines.

It's a free, open source Linux desktop for gaming and dev. Familiar taskbar and Start menu, updates that quietly undo themselves if something breaks, with much more planned.

Very early days, nothing to download yet, but I'll be sharing progress here as I go.

@Diegomalagrida Trying a desktop in the browser before installing is such a good idea

@RevonZev Good find, and thanks for posting the fix.

@9to5linux A point release that is mostly bug fixes is the best kind. Plasma 6.8 has been feeling really solid.

OrielOS v0.0.7 is out, and it's the first build you can actually install.

Boot the ISO with Secure Boot on, pick where it goes (fine next to Windows) and it downloads the latest version, checks the signature and installs.

Still early, and NVIDIA RTX only for now. Link below.

OrielOS has a proper installer now. CI builds the ISO automatically, and it can go on next to Windows or reinstall over an older OrielOS.

Only tested in a VM so far. Real hardware next.

@NixFred 129 people tuning in to a builders space on a Sunday is great work.

@DIYprojects55 Immutable and systemd-free at the same time is a bold combo. Curious how they handle rolling back a bad update without systemd in the boot path.

@shesaidmewakeup I'm building my own OS on Fedora's atomic base and it's been a solid foundation. For years I also thought Ubuntu was the way to go, primarily through my history of using Ubuntu server at work.

[Nath @BuiltByNath]

Phew, fixed that

[Nath @BuiltByNath]

Big day. OrielOS now installs on my gaming laptop. NVIDIA drivers load, Secure Boot is happy.

I somehow forgot WiFi exists and didn't include the firmware for it. Oops.

[Nath @BuiltByNath]

@BrodieOnLinux What's top of your list to fix on Linux for gaming?

[Nath @BuiltByNath]

@itsabhiyan Compositor, then a DE, then a whole toolkit is sounding like scope creep!

[Nath @BuiltByNath]

@iamtruk Nice one. What was actually breaking the old Linux build in the end?

@tcballard @huacnlee Love that the answer to "who did I miss" was people reverse engineering Touch ID. Bookmarking this.

@sv4010 A 980M doing VR in 2026 is properly impressive. Which driver is it on? I'd assumed Maxwell was more or less done on the newer NVIDIA branches.

Made an agent skill called kickoff. You pitch an idea, it researches it, asks you multiple choice questions until every decision is made, then writes the design docs and a task list. It won't write a line of code until you say go. Found it very useful so sharing, link in replies.
