SEMEI KAKUNGULU: THE KING WITHOUT A CROWN
This is Semei Kakungulu, the man colonialists misled with promises of making him Kabaka. He collaborated with them.
Oh! Let’s see what went wrong ✍🏽️
Born in the 1870s in Kooki, Kakungulu moved to the Buganda court as a young man. He quickly attracted the attention of the royal household through his exceptional skill as an elephant hunter and his tactical brilliance as a warrior.
During the intense religious conflicts of the late 1880s, he rose to prominence as a Protestant war hero and played a key role in restoring Kabaka Mwanga II to the throne. Recognizing his unmatched military ability, the expanding British imperial administration recruited him as their principal military proxy. 🤝🏾
Sir Harry Johnston is said to have told him: “I will ask that you be made Kabaka of all this country.”
Kakungulu went on to lead successful campaigns that subdued parts of Bunyoro and forcibly brought major regions of eastern and northern Uganda—including Busoga, Bukedi, Teso, and Bugisu—under British colonial control. 🥺
His ultimate act of betrayal came in 1899. When Kabaka Mwanga fled and joined forces with Omukama Kabalega of Bunyoro, Kakungulu led the expedition that hunted them down. He personally captured Omukama Kabalega; his fellow collaborator, Andereya Luwandaga seized Kabaka Mwanga. The two kings were delivered to the British and sent into exile. 😭
He expected the British to reward these vast conquests by installing him as a sovereign king (Kabaka) over Eastern Uganda, on a footing similar to the rulers of Buganda or Bunyoro. He even carved the words “Kabaka wa Bukedi” (King of Bukedi) onto the wooden stocks of his weapons.
The British, however, grew increasingly wary of his power and imperial ambitions. Instead of granting him a kingdom, they offered administrative titles: he became the first President of the Busoga Lukiiko (Parliament) and received territory around Mount Elgon, where he laid the foundations of modern Mbale City. Eventually, realizing that the British would never confer true royal sovereignty upon him, Kakungulu bitterly cut his ties with his colonial masters. Abasajja bumufera 🙆🏾♂️
What do we learn from this?
