@goodbyeyouth334 I don’t think that Mayu is meant to be portrayed as naturally talented. She’s only marginally better than Kumiko. Kumiko only ever benefitted from the meritocracy. It’s an important test of her values to see if she can still support the idea after being on the flip side.

@Dubcow127 Kumiko did perform, she just didn’t do the solo. And they still won, with her accepting the trophy and all. Winning nationals was never the point of the series, it’s about Kumiko’s growth as a character. And having her lose here is much stronger choice for her character.
