The Six-Pack myth.
Many people go to the gym to have a six-pack.
Factually, every human being has a six-pack.
The muscle responsible for a six-pack is called THE RECTUS ABDOMINIS
Everyone has it.
What makes the difference is the layer of fat that covers this muscle, hence unable to see your six-pack.
But again, you will see people in the gym doing "abs exercises" in their attempt to get a six-pack.
But they are doing the wrong exercises probably due to misleading information they collect from the internet or Instagram influencers.
The Rectus abdominis originates from the xiphoid process at the sternum and inserts at the pubic crest.
The muscle is intercepted by 3 fibrous bands called the tendinous intersections which now create the six-pack appearance.
The muscle is supplied by 3 spinal nerves:
- T7
- T8
-T9
This kind of innervation is what makes belly dancers do their magic of rolling the abdomen in 3 waves.
The function of this muscle is to:
- Flex the trunk/spinal column
- Tilt the pelvis posteriorly also known as Posterior Pelvic Tilt.
Doing situps, bicycle kicks, leg raises and even planks will not build the rectus abdominis.
The only workouts that are anatomically effective with the functions of the rectus abdominis are those that tilt your hips towards the chest or those that flex the trunk.
These are:
- Reverse crunches
- Cable crunches
- Heel touches have an effect on Transverse Abdominis
An exercise like a roller might have some impact if the trunk flexion is correctly activated. However, if you are fat, or have a weak back, don't use the roller.
Point to note:
You must lose your body fat to be in the range of less than 15% because the more body fat, the less the rectus abdominis will pop up.
You cannot spot reduce fat.
Don't ask "Which exercises can I do to reduce my potbelly?"
It does not exist.
It is not possible to focus on one region of your body.
Remember, 80% of your six-pack journey is in the kitchen.
They say,
"Abs are made in the kitchen and revealed in the gym."
