At the Ecological Society Conference ( #ESASCBO2022) last week, the Bushfire Hub was awarded a commendation in the Ecological Application prize for our work on the 2020 NSW Bushfire Inquiry. Very proud moment
@OwenBushfire was at the #FireClimate2022 conference in Melbourne. So many fine presentations, so many inspiring conversations. The only negative was catching COVID!
There have been lots of estimates of C emissions following the Australian #BlackSummer fires. How do they stack up against field observations? Our new paper looks at this, and post-fire tree mortality.

The Bushfire Hub has just published the first four of eight fire notes explaining our research results in a way that is useful for fire managers. Find them on our website https://t.co/Tc4wtjRmSb
Could you help The @bushfirehub with a science communications project to explain the research we did for the #bushfireinquiry in NSW? We are recruiting for a 3 month job in conjunction with @nswenviromedia

Our fire fuel consumption study was accepted for publication yesterday, wrapping up a major component of our @BushfireHub field campaign. Thanks to @Rachael_H_Nolan, @StephASamson and all the helpers. More to come when published.
New Hub research:
Hub researchers have developed a framework for quantifying the consumption of shrubby fuels during fire. This is important for estimating smoke emissions and modelling post-fire fuel accumulation https://t.co/4h8UgOVlb0
(1/3)
The framework was used to estimate shrubby fuel consumption during prescribed burns, showing that fine fuels were significantly reduced, with little effect on total above-ground biomass of the shrub layer.

@OwenBushfire published a major study on the dispersal of smoke pollution around prescribed burns for Work Package 3 this week, the culmination of two years of field measurements. https://t.co/s1M2XCkAGD
Thrilled to announce that @BushfireHub is a finalist for this year's Eureka Prize for Applied Environmental Research. See more at the awards website https://t.co/WzVgRuIEwS. Find out about the hub at https://t.co/9ZQAFD1zj3
Re Linksview bushfire house loss paper, you can access it at https://t.co/UkdXWwfnjE. Here is the random forest model ranking of variable importance. Cont For W is westerly distance to nearest forest.
@OwenBushfire Paper on house loss in the 2013 Linksview bushfire published today. It shows that the most important determinants were defence and distance to forest. Also finds evidence of house-to-house fire transmission.
On Saturday night, @bushfirehub PhD student @bridgeridoo and @mikeletnic from UNSW spotted 19 greater gliders in one hour along Army Road in the heart of the 2019 Gospers Mtn bushfire, the largest forest fire in NSW recorded history. Glider populations seems to have survived OK.
