Please do not make the mistake of thinking God went softer in the New Testament. That He, like I did with my children, became more tolerable of things my youngest did, that I was not tolerant of, of the older ones.

The difference is, in the Old Testament, God was running an actual nation. Not just a church, but a government. Laws, leaders, courts, the whole thing. So when people openly rebelled, it was not just personal sin. It was straight up treason against God’s kingdom. And treason in any government gets handled fast and decisively.

That is why Aaron’s sons were struck down. That is why Korah got swallowed. That is why Achan died. They were messing with the foundation while God was still building His system on earth.

Now fast forward to Jesus. Jesus did not come to run a physical nation. He said My kingdom is not of this world. From that point on, God stopped running a visible government and started calling people out of every nation into a spiritual one.

So instead of dropping the hammer immediately, God switched to mercy mode. Not because He got softer about sin, but because He opened a grace window.

Think of it like this. In the Old Testament, court was in session and sentences were carried out right away. In the New Testament, court is still real, but the judge stepped out to give people time to repent before sentencing.

These are the same laws, the same judge, just different phases of the court. Nothing got canceled. It just got delayed, and Revelation makes that clear. Its mercy now, but judgment later.

The bible says confess to one another. It's not that you can't directly ask God for forgiveness. It's that before you can boldly state your sins to someone, you must either be truly sorry or you just don't care.
It's a way of ensuring we are truly sorry and not just saying things

Why go to a priest for confession when you can ask God directly for forgiveness?

All forgiveness indeed comes from God. Catholics fully agree with that. But the key question is how God chose to give that forgiveness. Christianity is not only about private spirituality; it is also about the concrete ways Christ established to communicate His grace.

Throughout the Bible, God consistently uses human instruments to accomplish divine works - prophets speak His word, apostles heal in His name, and ministers serve as channels of His grace. This reaches its fullest expression in the sacraments. In confession, the priest is not a replacement for God; he is a channel through whom God acts.

Confession to a priest is not a Catholic invention. Jesus Himself instituted it. After the Resurrection, He said to the apostles: “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained” (John 20:22-23). This is not symbolic language. Jesus gave real authority - the authority to forgive sins in His name.

That authority did not die with the apostles. Just as the power to celebrate the Eucharist was handed on, so too was the power to forgive sins. The apostles passed it on to their successors, the bishops, who in turn share it with priests. This is why the Catholic Church speaks of apostolic succession - an unbroken link back to Christ Himself.

St Paul explains this beautifully: “God reconciled us to Himself through Christ and entrusted to us the ministry of reconciliation” (2 Corinthians 5:18). Confession is precisely this ministry at work.

When a priest absolves sins, he acts in persona Christi - in the person of Christ. It is not the priest who forgives; it is Christ who forgives through him (Mark 2:10). That is why the words are so powerful: “I absolve you.”

So, Catholics confess to God through the priest because Christ willed His mercy to reach us not only spiritually, but personally, concretely, and sacramentally.

Actually, Solomon’s life and death teaches exactly the opposite of this. Please bear with me let me explain what I mean.

The story of his life and how he ended up actually serves as a deterrence, rather than an endorsement, in why marrying multiple wives and frolicking with many women just simply because you can afford to do so is a very destructive idea.

People only remember Solomon for his wealth, his many wives, his wisdom and his magnificent kingdom but many people are not aware of how badly his life was messed up in the end - basically because of those very many women and the kind of vain sensual sybaritic life he lived.

It may interest you that the life of King Solomon ended up in spiritual decline, enticement to idolatry and an eventual split of his once great kingdom - all direct consequences of his sexual recklessness and endless marriages to many women who ultimately turned him from God.

Long before “polycule” became a buzzword on Nigerian social media, Solomon had something far worse. He had wives, concubines, girlfriends, sarewagbas, and whatever else you can imagine. No matter how wild you think it is, Solomon did it.

Towards the end of his life,
Solomon said "I denied myself nothing my eyes desired; I refused my heart no pleasure. My heart took delight in all my labor, and this was the reward for all my toil". Ecc2:10. He pursued a life of hedonistic material pleasure -using women as one of the means to this end. Any woman, or anything that promised pleasure, that he could imagine, he chased after. He had the money, the means, the power and the resources.

Yet after a life dedicated to hedonism and self seeking material pleasure, in the very next verse he said:
“Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun” Ecc2:11.

Ultimately what he found after dating and marrying all these women was that it was all nothing but futility and worthless vanity (that only compromised his heart, wrecked his commitment to God, and destroyed his kingdom).

So contrary to popular misconceptions,
The life of Solomon is actually a stern warning that a life dedicated to pursuing material pleasure and vain hedonistic sensual desires can only lead to chaos, regrets, and a destruction of one’s life achievements (which for him was collapse of a once-great kingdom).

So yes if a person is actually wise,
They will not live life like Solomon lived.
That is the whole point of Ecclesiastes.

However, there was a symbolic reason behind what he did. 30 pieces of silver were the price of a slave; him selling out Jesus like that symbolised how little/cheaply Jesus was valued.

The 30 pieces fulfilled Zechariah’s prophecy that pieces of silver thrown into the temple will buy the potter’s field.

The point was that the world may undervalue what is holy, but God still brings purpose, prophecy, and redemption out of human failure.
