@JonahDispatch Not only that, but it was primarily the American pocketbook that provided the money that did the lifting in China. No offshoring from the US, no Chinese economic miracle.
@the_sigh_op2@JonahDispatch I said believe if there is no blue check. But there's truth in all of it. The best trolls and shitposters and rage baiters do play on things somehow important to their targets, whether true or just believed to be so. This upbeat version is 👍in comparison.
USA. A Mexican restaurant. We had not yet ordered anything, and the food was already arriving.
Chips. Salsa. Unrequested. Free.
I stopped the waiter. "We have not earned these."
"They just come with the table, man."
They come with the TABLE. In my land, hospitality is a debt. Every gift creates an obligation, weighed carefully, returned in the proper season with interest of feeling. Here, the gift arrives before you have even proven you can pay for dinner.
This is not an appetizer. This is a declaration: we trust you. Eat.
I ate with the gravity the moment deserved. And then — I must report this calmly — the basket emptied, and a new one appeared.
"Did we…?"
"Refill," the waiter said. "It's bottomless."
Bottomless. They have wells of salsa. The supply lines of this nation are beyond anything my ancestors imagined.
My friend warned me. "Don't fill up on chips, dude."
Too late. I had accepted three baskets. Honor demanded each one be finished — an unfinished gift is an insult. By the time my actual food arrived, I was a ruined man.
I was not hungry. I was not comfortable. I had been defeated by a courtesy.
Generosity that arrives before the request cannot be repaid. It can only be survived.
I know the rule now. I have made my peace with the basket. One basket. Two at the most.
Who am I deceiving. There is no number of baskets I would refuse. The trust of a nation is in that salsa, and I intend to honor all of it.
@JonahDispatch There are many a-holes in the world, both rich and poor. Some of the rich ones became a-holes because they were rich. Some got rich because they were a-holes. Regardless, despise a person because they're an a-hole, not because they are (or aren't) rich.
@EODHappyCaptain This is straight up engagement farming and it's kinda funny people don't see it as such. I mean, America invented engagement farming!
On the other hand, engagement farming by making everyone feel great really isn't our thing, so I guess that explains a lot.
@joec522@JohnDalyBooks@JonahDispatch probably wouldn't even try to explain it. Just shake his head in disappointment.
In the other hand, I'd rather drink what @stephenfhayes offered. Can I get a case worth of Spanish wine recommendations?
@AlexMLeo@JonahDispatch I think being a poorly advised political rookie is a possibility. Saying "We were young, aggressive, and dumb and did some dumb things" would have worked 15 years ago but I guess the pros think that's not the way anymore.
I wouldn't vote for him, just giving a 3rd possibility.
