So why are we trying to protect pollinators from urbanisation and pesticides? 🧵
1. They are in huge decline and they pollinate about 75% of our food. Without hoverflies, bees, butterflies, moths we wouldn’t have most fruit, nuts, seeds or veg. Could we even survive?
Out of hibernation with 1,500 buckthorn whips available free over half-term at these pick-up points and family-friendly events. Big thanks to everyone involved in organising and @Hullccnews@MiresBeck @EmmaHardyMP for support #butterflies#Hull#environmental
Butterfly City is coming out of hibernation in February with 1500 Buckthorn to distribute in Hull. @thedeephull has started early with 5 whips filling a gap in their hedge 😍 #butterflycity#conservation
@HighwaysEngland Big thanks for including these buckthorn in the planting for Murdoch's Connection and props to @EmmaHardyMP for bringing us together. Will be checking them for Brimstone caterpillars next year 😁 #Butterflies#Hull#conservation
For a bit of context: the Silver-studded Blue has a mutualistic relationship with Lasius ants. The caterpillar produces a sugary liquid from a special gland on its back to attract the ants (and probably also uses chemical signals too).
I've so wanted to witness this: a Silver-studded Blue emerging from the ants' nest in which it pupated! This male emerged at half past two this afternoon at Wheal Maid @BBCSpringwatch#Springwatch
🌸 Noticing the little moments and changes in nature each day is so important for our collective and individual mental health and wellbeing. #BlossomWatch 🌸 https://t.co/p7a6oWoZ8R
We are very excited to launch our new online Yorkshire Butterfly Atlas, showcasing all the butterfly records we’ve received this century in fully interactive formats! Head to https://t.co/BhVtuVmxHZ to check it out, and there’s an instructional video at https://t.co/wYmkgf25yS
@EmmaHardyMP This is the salami slicing that has seen nature decimated. Every "compromise" means a loss to a habitat or species. Drip, drip, drip, they add up to the catastrophe we are experiencing.
Gorgeous new mural by super-talented artists from @GroundGallery along the cycle path. Captures the history of the track as a branch of the Hull-Hornsea line and new status as a wildlife haven, part of @ButterflyCity1 Absolutely stunning! @HumbersidePCC@GOSHNetwork @HCCWykeArea
