You learn something new everyday. @CABride07 taught me a new one today…wood booger. AKA Sasquatch. @TheMilfordAcad Hatfield wants this as the new mascot.
@mortonco21 I have been fortunate enough to work in a district where we've had the opportunity to choose some of our professional development. We've been allowed to read about/discover/watch/listen to what's powerful and meaningful for us, and it's amazing! We also have time to collaborate.
@mortonco21@ScanlanMattea In a way, you do have to, because you need your students to pass so they can graduate. Even though they've already earned credits to graduate.
@ScanlanMattea@mortonco21 Do you think educators, parents, and students could come together and decide to get rid of these high-stakes tests? I think it's possible; colleges are already changing admission requirements when schools use different types of grading, and not always requiring SAT/ACT scores.
@evansca4 Some of it is. I think there is a movement to teach how systems really work, and to push back on the "how can I have privilege if I don't know I have it" sentiment.
@KaylaCa27870035 How can we expect students to be citizens in this country if we fail to teach them how the country works? I'm willing to cut out one literary analysis and add in a political/government/social justice analysis.
"Educators often describe feeling afraid, lonely or uncertain about integrating social justice into their classrooms..." perhaps because they think it's "going to be too messy, too complicated."

@evansca4 One activity I like to do with seniors is bring in news articles about current issues, policies, bills, etc. Before I bring them and present discussion points, I meticulously look through my notes and ask myself, "Am I presenting facts, or is this my opinion?"
@evansca4 I think the key is to try to be unbiased in presentation, to teach students the history of highly-politicized issues, and to teach students how to engage in passionate but respectful discourse about them. However, I think it is also our job to stand openly against injustice.
