EMANCIPATION DAY reflects the first reparations the former enslaved in the Caribbean bravely fought for over centuries....
May we do their memories proud and carry on the reparations yet to be secured and create the type of just societies we all deserve to live in!
Today in Grenada, 7 members of the Trevelyan family presented a formal letter of apology to the people of this Caribbean island. “We apologize for the actions of our ancestors in holding your ancestors in slavery.” 104 members of the Trevelyan family signed the apology.
@LauraTrevelyan commendable efforts with @JohnDower et al in joining the calls for reparative justice long denied!
Physical shackles no more, but did you know there's still active marginalisation of Cultural practices required for healing inherent transgenerational trauma?
Which other religion(s) do we know of that has been criminalised by law?
We are hoping it is of value for you to consider adding this request to your list of demands? We're open to working together @LauraTrevelyan
We set up this campaign to help the government meet its remit!
So @LauraTrevelyan we hope to hear from you soon, because the healing has to be wholistic, it's not just financial payments etc that is/are the solutions....
We also need access to cultural modalities for repair and that's impossible if it by law criminalised!
We are still patiently waiting on a response from the office of @RishiSunak as to how and why Diwali, Eid, Chinese New Year and other forms of cultural reverence now have statutory rights under the Equlities Act 2010, but African-derived ones remain invisible!?
Resititution?
So you see @LauraTrevelyan the UK cannot justify in this day and age, to on one hand preach religious tolerance yet still be marginalising African faith practices, even those protected by UN charters that it is signatory to...and profiting off them unashamedly
@RishiSunak
@JohnDower we even wrote to the @RishiSunak asking for the Yourba 'deity' Oshun's annual festival (that has UN-heritage status) celebrated by millions all over the world to be added to UK's list of religious festivals like Diwali etc.....you guessed it?!
Still silence....
@LauraTrevelyan , one of the women interviewed for the exhibit was @Bonn1eGreer
So whilst it seems OK for establishment to make money off the culture or benefit from it, it is still very resistant to give legal recognition!
Just last year the @britishmuseum was content to exhibit 'Divine Feminine Power', featuring African 'goddesses and females archetypes' and globally whilst charging on the door, yet when we wrote to them to ask for support in getting legal recognition,
Yet even today as British purports 'religious tolerance' as part of its list of British values, no attempts have been made to repeal these laws nor recognise these systems of faith, in which people find solace and transformational healing experiences!
This would mean that even the noted historical treatment methods using herbs of the likes Mary Seacole automatically become illegal....Empire didn't mind its use to treat its soldiers, but not for the oppressed to free themselves?
It set a precedent that was consequently followed across all colonies and also enacted in similar forms across other European colonies!
This also effectively made all such religious/spiritual expressions punishable by law....the law is still on statute books today
The Obeah Act of 1898 introduced by the British effectively criminalised any and all forms of practices perceived to be associated with faith practices, as the establishment was concerned it fuelled rebellion against enslavement....this even included the use of herbs to heal....
