‼️My Swing Journey‼️
I’m here to help the players coming up but haven’t ever talked about the journey I had to take to learn what I know today. It’s impossible to explain in a post but here’s a little information🧵:
2020. I was still early in the process of really understanding the swing and why certain movements worked.
One thing I was beginning to understand was how the back shoulder could help deliver the barrel. Instead of pushing the hands and barrel forward with the arms, the back shoulder works down as the torso turns, creating tilt and allowing the hands to turn the barrel rearward and into the zone.
Stay organized over the backside. Let the back shoulder work. Turn the barrel instead of pushing it.
I didn’t have all the words for it yet, but I was starting to feel it.
Understanding came later. The movement came first.

One-legged swings 📝
One-legged swings force me to stay organized over the backside.
Without the forward move, I have to use tilt to get the barrel to the pitch while staying stacked over the back leg. If I lose that posture, the tendency is to use the arms and push the barrel forward.
Stay stacked. Tilt to the pitch. Turn the barrel.

Moving forward without letting the swing go forward.
Watch how much ground he gains in his step while keeping the backside strong and the upper body stacked. The forward move doesn’t force the hands or barrel toward the ball.
He stays back, tilts to the pitch, and turns the barrel from behind him.
That’s the difference between moving forward and swinging forward.
Create space. Keep the backside. Turn the barrel.

This is the difference between turning the barrel and pushing the barrel.
Watch Carpenter’s hands. He’s not using his arms to shove the barrel forward toward the ball. The hands turn the barrel rearward, the barrel gets working deep, and the body carries it through the zone.
Hands turn. Body turns. Barrel goes.
The less the arms have to manufacture the swing, the quicker and tighter the barrel can work.

Attention is a limited resource. 🧠
Every mechanical thought you add in competition takes attention away from something else.
Hands. Hips. Load. Stride. Barrel. Posture.
Meanwhile, you still have to see the ball, recognize spin, make a decision, get on time, and compete.
There’s a time to think mechanically. That’s what training is for.
The goal is to train those movements enough that when it’s time to compete, you can simplify.
See it. Commit. Compete.
Train the move so you can eventually stop thinking about the move.

A few years of work. The transformation is noticeable.
Staying stacked through the forward move. Keeping the backside strong. Creating depth with the barrel. Learning to turn instead of using the arms to create the swing.
This is what executing the moves we work on looks like. 🤝

‼️Basement Breakdown‼️
How to keep the backside strong.
A strong backside doesn’t mean sitting back.
Coil into the rear hip. Maintain the upward hip angle as you move forward.
The coil creates the tension. The upward hip angle helps preserve it.
Now I can commit forward without dumping onto the front side or losing the rear hip. Stay coiled. Stay stacked. Have a forward move and then snap it loose.

I actually do/did feel the tilt happen over the rear leg. The forward move and turn carries that angle toward the pitch. In a game-swing tilt and turn blend together because it happens so fast, but I’m not trying to tilt my upper body “toward” the pitch. That would send my head forward.
Tilt to the pitch.
Instead of pushing the hands down and forward with the arms to get to the level of the ball, I’m using tilt to take the entire turn there.
Create the angle. Stay tight. Keep the hands connected to the turn and let the barrel work rearward as the body works to the pitch.
The body gets me to the ball. The hands and barrel stay free to turn.
Don’t reach down to the pitch. Tilt the turn to it.

The crossover drill.
The focus here is maintaining an upward hip angle as I commit to the forward move.
I want to move forward without giving up the backside. That tilt keeps me stacked and gives me more time to control when I actually pull the trigger.
Once it’s time to go, the barrel snaps backwards instead of the hands pushing forward.
Move forward, stay back, and snap the barrel.
That’s where adjustability lives.

Ride the wave.
That’s the game. That’s life. There are going to be stretches where everything is clicking and stretches where it feels like nothing is.
There are absolutely times when the answer is to work harder. But there are also times when trying harder is exactly what’s getting in your way.
Perfectionism makes us want to fix everything. We get critical, overanalyze, add more effort and try to force our way out of it.
There’s an old Latin phrase the Romans would’ve used, via negativa. Sometimes improvement comes from removing what’s getting in the way rather than adding something new.
That applies to performance too.
If consistency is dropping, sometimes effort needs to drop with it. Less tension. Less thought. Less pressure to make something happen.
Control what you can control. Slow your breath. Slow yourself down. Adjust the effort and keep competing.
You don’t always need perfection.
Sometimes you just need less interference.

Watch the back knee.
At the last second, everything gets stacked — then it snaps.
Back knee drives under. Hands stay back. Barrel turns tight and violently around them.
That late snap is what creates the suddenness.

Adjustability
Being adjustable isn’t about slowing everything down or reacting late.
It’s about staying stacked as you move forward.
Keep the backside strong and the front side light, and you haven’t committed the swing too early. You can be on time for the fastball while still having the ability to adjust to something offspeed.
Once you leak onto the front side, your options disappear.
Stay stacked and you’ll stay adjustable.
