Writing a memoir is easy. All you have to do is open a notebook, open your chest, pull your heart out, smear it all over the paper, pop that heart back where it goes, stitch yourself up, return to your normal responsibilities, and repeat the next day.

Well, tonight my youngest graduated from high school, and then the Spurs won the Western Conference, so I GUESS YOU COULD SAY IT’S BEEN A GOOD NIGHT!

This poem came from a conversation I had last night with a fellow griever. It's been 15 months since I lost my husband, but I still sit there in disbelief that it actually happened to me.

There are a few
tragedies
that make people say
— I can’t imagine
what I’d do
if that happened
to me —
(you know,
those terrible stories
of the people
other people love
dying way too early)

It’s
strange—
startling—
certainly senseless—
when one of those
terrible things
actually happens
to you
It almost
doesn’t
feel
real
except
that it does

Caregiving and widowhood aged me. At first, though, I also felt younger … and not in a good way. Here’s how I explained year one of widowhood to a friend:
In some ways, it’s like being 20 again, trying to figure out where your life is going.
We expect 20 year olds to screw up big. Maybe we should expect newly widowed people to do the same.
If you’ve lost a partner, does this ring true?
And for everyone reading: what’s the best way to support a grieving friend through such a vulnerable time?
To alllllll the people who seem to think AI has given you the ability to get rich as a book editor and/or paid beta reader—
We authors get hit by scams all. the. time. We’ve trained ourselves to spot AI book covers, AI emails, and generally all the scammy
In other words … whoever told you this was a quick way to make a buck was lying
And if you’re passing off Claude or ChatGPT’s words as your own feedback, you’re lying too.
Find another career.
And when you do “succeed” in getting someone’s money, they’re gonna learn from it and get so savvy that not only will they never fall for it again, they’ll spread the word to their supportive writing community.
Fifteen months ago today, my husband died.
Every 23rd of every month for the last 14 months, I was so aware of my loss. I made a point to make space for grief on those days. So it was weird that today, I didn’t realize what day it was was until after 2 p.m.
