MUASA Position
The Makerere University Academic Staff Association, MUASA, represents academic staff at Makerere University.
@MuasaFraternity is concerned that the proposed Protection of Sovereignty Bill, 2026 could negatively affect universities, academic staff, and the future of research in Uganda.
Our concern is not political. It is professional and institutional.
Universities exist to teach, research, question, test ideas, and generate knowledge for society. Any law that makes normal academic work risky, including collaboration, policy critique, public discussion, and access to research funding, weakens the institutions that help a country solve problems.
A country that fears its thinkers eventually runs out of solutions.
Sovereignty is not protected by silencing knowledge. It is protected by strengthening the people and institutions that produce it.

This morning, we were at the Kawempe Chief Magistrate’s Court-Kanyanya, to receive a ruling in the bail application we made in the case of “unlawful drilling” against Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro (NUP-Deputy spokesperson), Eddy Mutwe, Archileo Kivumbi, Olivia Lutaaya, Calvin Tasi (Bobi Giant), Doreen Kaijja, among others.
We were told that the trial magistrate is unwell, and that she will be available on 27th March to deliver her ruling.
We shall not tire, till freedom is attained by our colleagues.

Alongside fellow opposition principals @skmusyoka@rigathi@HonJBMuturi@EugeneLWamalwa and leaders,
we marched to Vigilance House to deliver a formal petition to the Inspector General of Police, demanding accountability for the escalating police brutality and lawlessness targeting dissenting voices and opposition leadership.

Kenya media reporting this danger & presently most of these tubers, tomatoes, green pepper, veggies etc heavily covered with mancozeb, carbendazim (whitish) are here in all Uganda markets. No one cares, men and women who deals in this brags about how it protects their goods.
@SpireJim Dr; oncological cases on the rise in this country are 80% life style proceeds of which 60% are food related. Dearest citizens guard against what you eat . Your organic home grown greens, cereals , chicken and beef are safer options
