RE Fun Fact Friday #111
In Resonant Evolution, anthros have a taste for foods their feral counterparts would enjoy, including flavors and stimuli. Wolves are going to of course enjoy meat, but would also regularly consume organs, blood in the form of sauces and blood bread and filling oral fixations with bones. Herbivores like deer might keep a stash of dried seemingly inedible grasses and leaves on them to chew on.
The Eckzahn have many unique foodstuffs that are commonplace, but humans might find strange, or endearing. One that would probably throw most humans off is their consumption of animal blood. Normally from livestock, the excess blood is drained and used for various uses. Blood bread is a staple in Eckzahn meals. Bread made with the blood of some livestock animal is more common than bread without it. Blood mead or blood wine is a common drink, even with its meager alcoholic content, it is commonly consumed daily along with dinner.
Speaking of dinner, wolves also tend to only eat one or two meals a day. The meals tend to be bigger, with a dedicated rest period after. Everyone is supposed to hang around and socialize while sitting or laying. It is considered part of the meal.
Deer on the other hand don't have a typical dedicated meal time. They eat small bits throughout the day. They are very often known to carry food on them at all times to be snacked on. It could be the aforementioned dried and salted leaves, or a source of protein like feral animal eggs.
Rabbits have such similar eating habits, many deer and rabbit foods have exchanged into the other’s culture, and growing the interdependence in the Commonwealth.
Wolves like chewing on bones, not usually for much nutritional value, but as an oral fixation. Whether it be the leftover ribs of the cut of meat they consumed, or even dedicated bone snacks with artificial flavor packed into them and packaged as a stand alone snack to occupy time with.
Wolf food might taste pretty bland to a human. Many spices would be too overpowering. They have a large sensitivity to intense flavors and smells. However that does not mean they are flavorless, wolf food is focused on bringing out the natural flavor and juice of the over putting spices on top.
Spotted hyenas of the dry Suns take this a step further and use their massive bite force to break up the bones and consume the marrow inside, and sometimes the bones themselves. Males are also not usually allowed to eat with the females. the females will eat first, then at a separate table or time, the males will eat.
Wolves have a similar tradition, if not less extreme. The leader of a family or group of wolves, usually male, has to take a bite before the rest can start.
You may extrapolate these examples to most every anthro species. Every species has their own little eating quirk. But you can see how certain species are more prone to establish better relations with other species with similar eating habits. Herbivores tend to group together, pack hunters can understand the social dynamics of other species better. Their days and schedules are structured similarly, their customers are closer.
