On this day in 1957, President Dwight Eisenhower took the first ever presidential helicopter ride.

He took an Air Force Bell helicopter to Camp David starting a tradition that continues today.

You can see the helicopter at the Smithsonian’s Udvar-Hazy Center.

Occasionally presidents will schedule a full Cabinet meeting at Camp David. The first to do so was President Eisenhower who held the first ever Cabinet meeting at Cam David which was also his first Cabinet meeting following his heart attack

On this day in 1942, President Franklin Roosevelt stepped out of his car at Hi-Catoctin Camp #3 and said “this is a Shangri-La.” 

Those words selected the site for his presidential retreat and began the history of what is now known as Camp David.

Before there was a chapel at Camp David, presidents went to church in nearby Thurmont, Maryland.

On quiet Sundays, especially Easter, presidents and their families would leave Camp David and worship alongside local congregations in this small town at the foot of the mountains.
