Keep a notebook. Travel with it, eat with it, sleep with it. Slap into it every stray thought that flutters up in your brain. Cheap paper is less perishable than gray matter, and lead pencil markings endure longer than memory.
—Jack London—
Is Gandhi the most misunderstood individual of the 20th century? The man we know as the "Father of the Nation" has provoked the most furious arguments. Having studied Gandhi for decades, I am delighted to announce the publication of my new book, ARGUMENTS WITH GANDHI, where I examine the engagement with his ideas of a range of global figures, from Ambedkar and Nehru to Mandela and Martin Luther King.

All professions, & this includes economists, must be aware of this risk:
“A group of people, all praising one another of their understanding of some phenomenon, can create a “cult effect,” where knowledge is replaced by a shared illusion”
Procrastination isn’t just about being lazy. You procrastinate because starting the task forces you to face your skill level, and your ego would rather be "unmotivated" than "incompetent."
Everyone is demanding educational reforms.
Excellent idea.
But can we begin by reforming the media first?
Today, our biggest influencers are not our teachers but TV studios, WhatsApp forwards, YouTube channels and social media trollers. Some of them teach us to hate before we understand, react before we think, and choose narratives over truth.
Whether we call ourselves andhbhakts or wear any other political label, we've all been conditioned to become more partisan and more narrow-minded.
Forget educational reform. Reform the media first. A nation that is fed propaganda every day cannot be educated. It can only be conditioned.
If anyone has shown what it means for India to be a Vishwaguru, it is our Gen Z.
They have lived Sanatan Dharma, not preached it. Courage without hate. Strength without violence. Patriotism without blind obedience.
Unlike many of their counterparts across the world, they have shown that you can stand firmly against injustice without burning your own country down.
Maybe it's time the Hindu nationalist party learnt a thing or two from these young Indians about Hinduism, nationalism, and what it truly means to be a Vishwaguru.

Before you rush to criticise @Wangchuk66, first pause to earn the ethos of fasting for 26 days for a cause larger than yourself.
He lies in the ICU today, having lost 11 kg, including muscle mass, because he chose sacrifice over comfort. The least we can offer him is a day of compassion before burdening him with our own expectations and political calculations.
Not everyone is qualified to judge a life of selfless service. One must first earn the moral stature to do so.
Please..Have a heart.

Difficult books demand patience because they ask the reader to slow down and think carefully about each idea. In a world filled with quick information and constant distraction, the act of reading slowly becomes a form of intellectual discipline. The reader who struggles through complex ideas gradually develops a stronger mind. Understanding does not appear instantly, but grows through repeated effort and reflection. Just as physical exercise strengthens the body, intellectual effort strengthens the mind. The reader who learns to endure the temporary confusion of difficult books eventually discovers insights that remain hidden from those who only seek easy reading.
Not surprising. Academic institutions in Maharashtra are fast reduced to nothing. A complete political control characterizes the academic scene. And then, we discuss ranking, Indian Knowledge and what not.
Maharashtra, once the state of Jotiba and Savitri Phule, Ranade, Gokhale, Ambedkar, Sane Guruji, and so many other great and independent-minded thinkers, is now ruled by a band of fearful and small-minded men.
A couple of things about my #Iran posts
Disagree with my views, but don't casually disregard my facts. Whatever I have written about Iran, including that Tehran was fully compliant with the terms of the 2015 nuclear agreement until Trump came and sabotaged it in 2018, was factual. If I make factual mistakes, I own them up and make corrections. That's part of my job.
Two, I am not anti-West. I am non-West--that's a methodological difference. I refuse to fall prey to the mainstream western narrative. My world is not divided between binaries. In the case of Iran, there were several binaries-- the liberal one is that this is a fight between an oppressive regime and a freedom-loving people; and there is conservative binary between American interventionism and the Islamist radicalism of the East. Which one you will choose--they will ask you! None. I try to look at the grey matter.
That doesn't mean that I am blind to the quest of the Iranian people for more rights and freedoms. I have written extensively about the inability of the system to reform--including reports from Tehran. But you have to place the rigidity of the system in the extremely hostile economic and geopolitical environment it is operating in. You should also be mindful of the propaganda. In the Persian Gulf, Iran and Iraq are the only two countries that offer some meaningful representation to their people. Thirty million people, that's half the electorate, voted in the 2024 Presidential elections in Iran. Have you heard of it? While other despotic countries in the region -- presidential or monarchical-- have functional economies, either thanks to their oil wealth or economic assistance from the US--Iran, despite its oil wealth, is unable to take care of the economic needs of its people, because of the sanctions. That's what is keeping the system rigid, triggering circles of crisis.
The liberal critique of Iran, which Said would love to call Oriental gaze, overlooks these structural realities. Because they don’t fit their narratives, which are used by their foreign policy establishments, including the human rights-living Israel. As students of IR, our job is to go beyond the mainstream narratives and simpleton generalisations, drawing in from history, particularly from the recent western military interventions in the east in the name of bringing in freedom and democracy.
Umberto Eco, who owned 50,000 books, had this to say about home libraries:
“It is foolish to think that you have to read all the books you buy, as it is foolish to criticize those who buy more books than they will ever be able to read. It would be like saying that you should use all the cutlery or glasses or screwdrivers or drill bits you bought before buying new ones.
“There are things in life that we need to always have plenty of supplies, even if we will only use a small portion.
“If, for example, we consider books as medicine, we understand that it is good to have many at home rather than a few: when you want to feel better, then you go to the ‘medicine closet’ and choose a book. Not a random one, but the right book for that moment. That’s why you should always have a nutrition choice!
“Those who buy only one book, read only that one and then get rid of it. They simply apply the consumer mentality to books, that is, they consider them a consumer product, a good. Those who love books know that a book is anything but a commodity.”
