@HerbWiseman@HerbWiseman Can I encourage you to not perpetuate the shaming of disabled people by separating them from their disabilities? Sincerely, a disabled person.
@shiftlesssheep@GraggVaill Like... I train dogs and dog training is basically just ABA. The thing is, dogs aren’t capable of autonomous, intelligent thought. Autistic people are and should not be conditioned in that way.
@shiftlesssheep@GraggVaill They just conditioned those behaviors out of them because they were perceived as problematic.
Self harm stims are problematic but every other autistic trait that ABA conditions us to ignore or or repress isn’t. There are better methods than ABA therapy.
@GraggVaill@abaukdiscussion@1dcabamom@NeuroRebel@Twitter I don’t want to come at you with hate or anger or blame in these debates because I truly just want the next generation of autistic children to grow up without the kind of negativity and abuse that my generation grew up with.
@1dcabamom@abaukdiscussion@GraggVaill@NeuroRebel@Twitter We all do it. Regardless of Neurotype, Sexuality, Gender, Race, or Culture... and when she does I hope that you are willing to listen and admit that you made some mistakes. Because ABA therapy has been proven to affect a persons psychology in innumerably harmful ways.
@1dcabamom@abaukdiscussion@GraggVaill@NeuroRebel@Twitter It may not be now, it may not be in 10 years, or even 20, but one day your child is going to come to a reckoning with what happened to them growing up, how the world and their parents left them with trauma that defined who they became.
@GraggVaill@NeuroRebel@GraggVaill please read this article, it’s sourced and written by a parent of an autistic child for parents of autistic children https://t.co/Wnc6hZynvN
@GraggVaill@NeuroRebel It doesn’t matter how compassionate or caring an ABA therapist is, because they still believe that Autism is fundamentally inhuman and that they should alter the behaviors of autistic people to make us human. The building blocks of ABA therapy are oppressive.
