I played some part in this โpatriarchy surge,โ so Iโll respond to Owenโs post.
Patriarchy is inevitable.
God has built it into the fabric of the cosmos. It is part of the divine created order. You could as soon smash it as you could smash gravity. It is natural and irrevocable. Cicero was right: โCustom will never conquer nature; for it is always invincible.โ
Men were made to rule. They always have and always will. Nothing can change that. Nothing will.
It is not a question of whether men will be ruling, but which ones and how.
God is the Father; however, Scripture also refers to the devil as the father of lies. Moreover, those who follow God are referred to as sons of God, while those who are unsaved and share in the devilโs rebellious nature are referred to as sons of the devil.
All that to say, patriarchy, like so many good and natural things, can be twisted into something evil.
There is such a thing as good patriarchy. It is manly, virtuous, and its first aim is the glory of God. From it flow provision, protection, and leadership.
There is also such a thing as evil patriarchy. It can be either effeminate or brutal. It is sensual, undisciplined, and driven by selfish ambition as its primary aim. From it flow disorder, violence, and either abdication or tyranny.
Are there men who, even using my book or writings, justify rebellion and tyranny in the name of biblical patriarchy? Of course. If the devil can twist the perfect Psalms, surely his sons can twist the imperfect words of men.
However, I see more and more men taking responsibility for themselves, getting serious about following God, and producing such an abundance that they are able to care for and lead others in their homes and beyond.
When I read statements like this, I see something that casts suspicion on anyone who talks about patriarchy. The implication is that itโs all a showโthat those claiming to be godly patriarchs are actually abusers and tyrants in their homes.
I find it unhelpful, to say the least. But Twitter thrives on hyperbole and generalities, and Iโve been guilty of similarly sloppy writing myself.
Men stepping up to be what God made them to be is a good thing, and I hope this movement continues to grow.
Some will abuse it, no doubt. But we should throw gasoline on the fire of godly patriarchy and water on the flames of wicked patriarchy.
