This isn’t a wow signing, but it’s a smart one.
Which already puts it ahead of most recent decisions.
We need midfield depth with Lavia’s issues.
Natural 6 / deep-lying 8.
Single or double pivot.
Low-risk move.
Also a proper reference point for the younger Brazilians.

Keep the same energy all the time and change might happen. If everybody was angry every time it happened they might be forced to do something about it...

I’M BACK WITH A LONG THREAD
A message to Chelsea fans,
I've got an important message, and I don't want to crap on your parade, BUT...
I think it's important that we both are in awe of the transfer windows we had in recent years in the Todd Boehly era, but are also rightfully worried about the future, especially around youth, youth prospects and youth development.
I think this specific deadline day has proven to fans that it's going to be tough with departures of players you might not want to move. Those are the consequences of our actions without question, but not how you might expect. I don’t think Chelsea fail FFP (explored here > https://t.co/fyxPesfw16), although that’s educated guesswork (because only Chelsea, the EPL and UEFA know the books), but youth prospects trained at the club hold the key to ensuring the continued passing of FFP regulations. That means I wouldn’t fall in love with youth developed players too much over the coming years until things have levelled out.
Regardless of how it plays out from now until the end of this window, it appears as though Gallagher, Chalobah, & Mattsen were expendable & it’s not hard to see why when you look at the structure of deals being allowed by UEFA and the EPL.
If Chelsea sign Cole Palmer for £45m and can spread that across 5 years his amortisation value for transfer fee is £9m a year & that's how the books read.
If you sell Gallagher for £45m that's £45m on the books today. Despite the fact in this scenario Chelsea would have spent £45m and got in £45m that books for this year would read a £36m profit. That’s a really simple way at looking at quite a detailed and nuanced situation, but those are the bottom lines.
That means players who aren't currently under amortisation (any player who has come through the youth) has significant value because they're pure profit for the books that year. That's my concern. The structure of the current UEFA and EPL deals means youth prospects now are far more valuable because they’re offset against 5 years of deals. This applies across the board for every club. It’ll also be one of the reasons City sold Cole Palmer, but because Chelsea spent a fortune it’ll be them under the limelight.
I expect January will be pivotal & one of the reasons Chelsea were open to selling Mattsen, Cucurella, Chalobah and Gallagher in the summer is because inevitably not all of them are going to play, so their value between now and January will decrease exponentially. As I’ve said in every post that I’ve written like this, the amortisation strategy is fun, and exciting, and it looks great initially, but it’s really risky. Chelsea will enter every window in the red & yes they make up for a lot of it with sponsorships, gate, merchandise sales etc… but so does everyone else.
However, I don’t think Chelsea don’t have a long term strategy to deal with getting profit. That’s the reason youth is the key focus. Even if youth players don’t play their value tends to maintain itself or increase rather than decrease. Chelsea did this a lot under Roman as well. One of the key examples I can remember was Thorgan Hazard. He signed for the club, went on loan for three seasons and was sold at a 1500% markup. He played zero games for Chelsea. That happened a lot. The same is going to happen now. If a player breaks through, great, you don’t have to buy somebody in that position for a long time & you can sell somebody else. If they’re on the edge you sell them for a decent profit. If they’ve been poor, you can still reclaim everything you laid out as prices for players increase year over year.
Those are my thoughts, what do you all think? #Chelsea #CFC
