@HannahDutton8 Time to switch my focus to the classroom. Although I am excited to get on a schedule, this summer I have made my health my #1 priority. With what is to come within a school year, I’ll need to remember to breathe, not sweat the small stuff and refocus on my health probably daily.
@HannahDutton8 My mom has been so giving of herself and time these past couple of weeks taking care of me after my surgery. It’s not much, but I wanted to “give back” and say thank you by taking her out to lunch at her favorite place.
@alyssacabhart I’ve never been one that accepted every avenue of the BIST philosophy. After working through this book, it has opened my eyes to accepting BIST as a positive reinforcement to have when managing students and their behaviors. Gives Ts and Ss a chance to talk things out. #323learns
@alyssacabhart I tend to make sure everyone else is doing well before myself. I need to adjust that thinking and take care of myself first. Fill my cup, then others. If I am happy, healthy, and stress free…I reflect that in my parenting and teaching. Everyone wins! #323learns#belonging323
@alyssacabhart We have several Ss that decompress when they’re able to draw in a notepad. They have a pass that is used only when needed to take a 5 min break to draw. This lets us know they need this time and we can keep a better eye on how their mood changes. #belonging323#323learns
@alyssacabhart I do a decent job at not taking things too personally. I’ve learned that Ss will lash out at those they trust the most, because they know you’ll always be there. I need to work on staying calm in moments that are repetitive behaviors that annoy me. #323learns#belonging323
@HannahDutton8 Although a breast cancer diagnosis isn’t what anyone wants to hear…the news has reconnected me with so many wonderful woman near and far. They have been constant motivators and have helped me get through this difficult time. #323learns#livewell323
@alyssacabhart I think we’re doing a decent job with this at Valley. Finding time to do so is always an issue, but we’re utilizing team time and teacher plan periods when in dire need. These convos can be implemented easily within daily activities as well if needed. #belonging323#323learns
@alyssacabhart Heartfelt problem solving involves the S in the decision making. This helps build acceptance and belonging. In turn the S feels they have a voice in finding the solution that will help them eradicate the problem/issue/behavior. #323learns#belonging323
@alyssacabhart Practicing positive self talk, changing daily negative comments instantly, celebrating the beautiful moments take no time at all and are usually shadowed by negative behavior of others, quick jot and turn and celebrate. All quick and easy to implement. #323learns#belonging323
@alyssacabhart Nothing really was a surprise in this chapter. I think it’s important as someone that our Ss look up to, that we practice what we teach. When we model these social and emotion skills daily for ourselves, our Ss are more comfortable to implement them too. #323learns#belonging323
@HannahDutton8 Of course I forgot to take a pic, but I just finished getting most of my classroom in order for the new school year. When things are “in order” there, I can relax more and enjoy the waning days of summer. #323learns#livewell323
@alyssacabhart Connecting with your Ss and building relationships with them is key. It’s ok to let them get to know us as people, not just as Ts. Let them in and then they will let you in. That builds trust and respect, but be firm with your expectations and rules. #323learns#belonging323
@alyssacabhart Strengths in my classroom are that we use our neighbors quite a bit to work through problems. No one works alone. Ss have to rely on others to complete tasks. Some Ts need to acknowledge that all Ss in the building are all of responsibilities regardless of grade, placement, etc.
@alyssacabhart Belonging is the most important part of the circle of courage. If Ss don’t have a role/know their role within the classroom dynamic they can feel left out, alone, and/or begin to not care about the class all together. Working respectfully in groups help with this. #belonging323
@alyssacabhart Most students feel a sense of belonging. Our Ts (most) build great relationships with Ss. We have scored low on district surveys that groups of Ss don’t feel like they belong. That’s something we’ve been working on and BIST has helped with that. #323learns#belonging323
@alyssacabhart I tend to fill everyone else’s cup, but not my own. I can’t rely on others to do it for me. I need to fill my cup first if it’s resting, working out, hanging with friends, etc it needs to be done. A happy Christy = a happy mom and teacher. #323learns#belonging323
@alyssacabhart I’m an open book with my Ss. I tell them my rocks & that I am here to help manage theirs. We’re not all perfect, we all have struggles, but we have to learn out to manage them when they get too heavy. Respect everyone. We don’t know what they are struggling with eternally.
