Agreed. But I understand it often stems from lack of access, not malice. I stopped illegal PDFs to @literarydenizens book club last year to promote purchase of physical copies. We lost some members who were mainly students. I believe readers would buy books if they had the money.
Before nuances become the star of the conversation, we need first to admit that piracy is theft. Illegally distributing intellectual work is theft.
We cannot have a conversation if we cannot arrive at these easy conclusions.
Was just talking to @samuelpoetry about this. Piracy is a sad reality we must grapple with, especially as Nigerian writers. I don’t speak for everyone, but my goal as a writer is to be read first. Cultural relevance >
Soyinka still works as a professor. JP Clark was an academic, the same with Achebe and many of our stalwarts. Does piracy hurt writers? Yes. But earning a living as a writer is more nuanced than just selling books.
That story is not going to write itself.
