The backlash against the new God of War has nothing to do with the protagonist being a woman. We’ve had iconic female leads for decades like Lara Croft, Jill Valentine, Chloe Frazer, Sadie Adler and most gamers were totally fine with them.

This is about taking Kratos, the face of the series since 2005, and pushing him aside for a character who was mostly mystical and dead until now. It just feels like an unnecessary break with what the franchise was about.

Look at Battlefield V people hated it when they added female soldiers in a WWII setting because it just didn’t fit historically.

Another example is Rainbow Six Siege half the operators are women and nobody complains because they’re actually good, well-designed characters that fit the game.

That proves the point: people don’t care if it’s a woman, they care when it feels forced and doesn’t fit the established world. The usual “you just hate women” card doesn’t land here.
