Something that hasn’t sat well with me for the last few months is the near-unanimous agreement of nearly all analysts & commentators of the positive changes of the new FRC Rule Enhancements…with not much space for anyone who speaks negatively about the rules or aspects of them

It has become nearly like an anti-GAA sentiment if anyone speaks out against any of the rules.
I think there needs to always be critical analysis of the rules as a whole, individual enhancements, and specific aspects of each rule change.

It can’t be a ‘I’m in favour of the rules’ or a ‘I’m not in favour of the rules’
Surely it needs to be- what specific aspects can work well, and what specific aspects should be binned, and what aspects need to be tweaked

For instance, I played a friendly game myself last night with the new rules (and from watching the first 2 rounds of the NFL), the 2-pointer is a bit of fun to challenge yourself with.
But it fundamentally changes the sports scoring system; how a team attacks; how opposition defends; the ‘worth’ of a goal; the ‘worth’ of a point.
I’m not in favour of it.

I don’t see myself there needs to be a greater value put on a specific type of point more than another.
Andy Cole scored a bag full of goals for Newcastle from 1-touch finishes into the small box.
Alan Shearer scored even more for Newcastle, with many of them belters from outside the large box.
Should his goals be worth more?
Are they better goals (hit hard/accurate), or Cole’s (positioning, anticipation, reading the game, acceleration).

Same with the long Kick Outs.
They’ve become a fight and a battle and complete chaos.
It’s not an aspect of the game I admire or enjoy playing myself.
Many (if not all) sports have aspects of control and/or possession
It doesn’t all need to be chaotic to be enjoyable.
Soccer is largely possession based, with a balance or chaotic attacking, rugby too.
It’s about getting the balance right
The last few years in Gaelic football it has become too easy for teams to hold possession. I hope it doesn’t go the other way now.
It will have many implications.

I think the hooter is unnecessary; the solo & go speeds up the game, but could lead again to more athletic, powerful running players being picked above smaller skilful players. The advanced mark is great! 3/3 structure is brilliant; the advantage rule needs a more clear definition to involve only 1 short passage of play. The 12v11 situation with the GK in the opposition half needs to allow one of the attacking 3 forwards to track him. I like the 1v1 throw in a lot, opens up some nice opportunities for tactical set plays. I believe the 50m advancement and free for fairly minor infractions is too punitive.

I could analyse the rest of the rules, but won’t.

I am broadly in favour of rule changes, and the game needed to be changed.

I also believe there are too many rule changes…implemented too quickly…and with some that may not lead to a ‘better’ game. It’s not all about pure chaotic entertainment after all.
The 0-0 Champions League Final between Juve & Milan was one of the most technically and tactically riveting games I’ve ever seen.
There are many ways to skin a cat in sport (sorry cats!)

The 3/3 Structure would have solved a lot of issues for the sport. And the no back pass to the GK in their own defensive half.
Both these would have opened up the game; not allowed packed defence; and allowed teams to press up on teams high up the pitch.

I would have preferred a more drip-drip effect, and see what impact they have.

But the most thing I would ask is- listen to the people who are critical too 👍
