Sgt. Maj. Mike Vining: The Man. The Meme. The Army Legend.
An EOD technician and founding member of multiple elite units, Vining made his mark on Army history early in his career when he helped destroy a weapons cache with over 7 million rounds of ammunition.
He gained fame online as the subject of Army memes, thanks to his unassuming demeanor and stack of medals.
In honor of his birthday, here’s a small part of his incredible story.

In my opinion, ICE just set back Republicans 30 years in California. That's it for them. Whatever ground they made in California just got evisicrated. Republicans didn't learn anything from Prop 187. #ICE#ICERaids
@MattWalshBlog You were out of line. This isn't calling it as you see it. Your attitude was no different than the pharasees who condemned Jesus and those around him. Your attitude would of stoned the prostitute that Jesus had compassion for.
I'm no expert but even I can see the Lakers are getting cooked is because Nuggets are getting after those rebounds for second chance points when they miss. Take that away and Lakers would be up 3-0. This is why you miss a guy like Dwight Howard. @Lakers#Lakers#LakersNation
I try not to raise my voice during interviews, but I felt the line of questioning by @CBCNews here was totally off. We are trying to do the right thing by calling on civilians to evacuate, yet get lectured on humanity.
At this moment there are hundreds of missing innocent Israelis, their families broken and begging for any piece of information, any lead to help bring them home.
I am using my platform to share their names. their faces, to tell the world what is happening.
Please share their photos, share the stories
together let's #BringThemBack

I don’t want to talk about this, but considering current events, I’ll share something I saw in 2006 in Iraq. Understand that I hate discussing this. Not a single day goes by that I don’t think about it. One night our PL walks in the enlisted tent inside BIAP around 2300 and asks for volunteers. Being the crazy bastard I am, I immediately got up and began to put my armor on without saying a word. I grabbed the M249, a few extra belts, and some extra hand grenades and followed the LT to the motor pool where our M113 was waiting. We performed all our radio checks, fueled up, called in to HQ, and left the front gate. It was dark. Really dark. The air had an awful stench of burning trash and the water in the canals smelled of feces. A dead dog laid on the side of the road under a dimly lit street light outside the gate. It was very quiet. Like the world was dead. Perhaps it was in that moment. We proceeded to our objective. A small home with a humble adobe brick wall outside its perimeter with some very dim lights barely lighting up the courtyard. Out came a middle aged man, carrying a little girl who was screaming bloody murder. We brought her in the M113 where our medic immediately began to stabilize the wound on her right hand. Two of her fingers were missing just above the knuckle. She calmed down considerably once our medics took possession of her. We proceeded to take her back to BIAP to receiver proper treatment with the father riding along with us. I was pulling security with the M249 but I would occasionally glance back at the little girl who had a look of sorrow and desperation on her face. It felt routine but in some ways something wasn’t right. The following day, about a dozen 60mm mortars landed very close to our tents. Luckily nobody was hurt. We later learned that the father purposely cut his daughter’s fingers off so he could gain access to the FOB and collect intelligence. Not a single day goes by that I don’t see that little girls face. Not a day goes by that I don’t realize what that look was on the ride back. Not a single day goes by that I don’t wonder if she is still alive. Point is…never underestimate the lengths your enemy is willing to go to in order to destroy you. Never forget the innocents who are caught in the middle.
Can you imagine what America would look like if those of us who say we follow Jesus exhibited the character of Jesus? If we were more Jesus than Democrat, more Jesus than Republican, more Jesus than capitalist….
A young statistician saved their lives.
His insight (and how it can change yours):
During World War II, the U.S. wanted to add reinforcement armor to specific areas of its planes.
Analysts examined returning bombers and plotted the bullet holes and damage on them (as in the image below).
Based on this analysis, they came to the conclusion that adding armor to the tail, body, and wings would improve their odds of survival.
But a young statistician named Abraham Wald noted that this would be a tragic mistake.
By only plotting data on the planes that returned, they were systematically omitting the data on a critical, informative subset:
The planes that were damaged and unable to return.
Abraham Wald recognized a key fact:
• "Seen" planes had sustained damage that was survivable.
• "Unseen" planes had sustained damage that was not survivable.
Wald concluded that armor should be added to the *unharmed* regions of the returning planes (the areas without bullet holes on the image below).
His profound logic:
Where the survivors were unharmed was actually where the planes were most vulnerable.
Based on his insight, the military reinforced the engine and other vulnerable parts, significantly improving the safety of the crews during combat and saving thousands of lives.
Abraham Wald had identified a cognitive bias called "Survivorship Bias":
The error resulting from systematically focusing on survivors (successes) and ignoring casualties (failures) that causes us to miss the true base rates of survival (the actual probability of success) and arrive at flawed conclusions.
We see examples of Survivorship Bias all around us:
1. We read books on the common traits of successful people, but fail to consider all of the unsuccessful people who possessed those same traits.
2. We applaud the belief when we hear that an entrepreneur took out a second mortgage and succeeded, but fail to consider all of the entrepreneurs who did the same and went bankrupt.
3. We study the cultural strategies of the most successful companies, but fail to consider all of the companies that followed those same strategies and fell apart.
When we fail to consider the range of outcomes and the hidden evidence, we develop a skewed (and often incorrect) view of reality.
It cannot be avoided altogether, because the vast majority of books and history are written by and about the survivors and victors, but wherever possible, consider the unseen evidence.
Remember: What is unseen often has just as much value as what is seen.
