Addressing the deficit narratives around/about adolescence in teacher training is one way to start transitioning to better schools that achieve better outcomes for adolescents.
One of the biggest challenges we face when working with middle schoolers is confronting and navigating the deficit narratives we (as a society) believe about adolescents. Educators have to stop believing that middle school is chaotic and middle schoolers are crazy.
Middle schools would look & feel very different if promise, curiosity and joy were the foundation. Perhaps they'd be gentler places AND sites of deep learning.
We're getting pretty excited for #AMLE22! ๐
Feeling FOMO? There's still time to be involved in the world's largest gathering for middle grades educators. The 2nd call for presentations is now open. Deadline to submit is Sept. 9.
