Last week, I presented our latest paper, coauthored with @tonirodon, on the electoral effects of the NextGenerationEU funds on local governments in Spain, at the final workshop of the @COVIDEUProject. It was a great pleasure to work with such a fantastic group of researchers!
We are grateful to all participants for such a rich conversation, and to the whole COVIDEU team for an inspiring final workshop.
Special thanks to the @VolkswagenSt for generously funding the COVIDEU Project and to the Humboldt Governance Lab for hosting the event.
On Friday, the COVIDEU Project held its last yearly workshop in Berlin. After a morning review of each of our team’s current research projects, we opened our doors for a roundtable on radical right support among young people.
One key takeaway from our discussion: growing support for far-right parties among younger cohorts is neither uniform nor inevitable. Context is important; social media, institutional trust, and economic precarity all play different roles.

Do border closures change political attitudes?
We show that COVID-related border closures led to a short-term increase in hostility towards immigrants and decreased support for the EU, in affected border regions. But their negative effects faded quickly.
