The pilot-in-command of Air India flight AI2379 from Phuket to Delhi has reportedly tested positive for Marijuana. The aircraft dropped 300 feet during severe turbulence over Odisha on August 4th. 17 people were injured, including crew members with spinal injuries. A second confirmatory test is pending, but let that sink in for a moment: the person responsible for 137 lives, including three infants, may have been flying under the influence.

This was not caught during a routine pre-flight check. This was caught during a post-flight screening after an incident. Which means the system did not prevent it. The system discovered it after the fact. After the 300-foot drop. After the injuries. After the spinal fractures. The drug testing protocol worked as an investigation tool, not as a safety gate. That is a critical distinction.

And this is not an isolated failure. This is a pattern.

Fourteen months ago, Air India flight 171 crashed into BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad. 260 people dead. The preliminary report showed both engine fuel control switches moved from "RUN" to "CUTOFF" within seconds of takeoff. One pilot asked, "Why did you cut off?" The other replied, "I didn't." Every indication points toward deliberate action in the cockpit. Reports surfaced about the pilot's mental health history.

One year and two months later, Air India has not released a final crash report. It has not shared any analysis of its pilots' mental health. It has not published an action-taken report on crew psychological screening. Its CEO Campbell Wilson said in October 2025 that there was "nothing wrong with the aircraft's operations or practices that required changing." Nothing wrong. 260 people dead and nothing required changing.

Now a pilot tests positive for marijuana. Post-incident, not pre-flight.

Connect the dots. In Ahmedabad, there were indications of a pilot with mental health issues that went undetected or unaddressed. In the Phuket flight, a pilot with psychoactive substances in his system passed through whatever screening existed before flying a commercial aircraft full of passengers. These are not random, unrelated events. These are symptoms of the same systemic failure: Air India does not have a functioning crew health and safety culture.

The Tata Group took over Air India in January 2022. Four and a half years ago. The brand new A350s and 787s look beautiful. The business class product is competitive. The app has been redesigned. The livery is fresh. But an airline is not a luxury brand. An airline is a safety operation that happens to sell tickets. And on safety, Air India has been disturbingly poor.

The old aircraft in the fleet still have basic maintenance issues that passengers routinely report. Cabin panels come loose during turbulence. Seats are broken. In-flight entertainment systems do not work. These are not catastrophic failures, but they tell you something about the culture. If an airline cannot fix a broken seat in four years, what confidence do you have that it is rigorously screening its pilots for substance abuse and psychological fitness?

I understand that changing culture takes time. Tata inherited a deeply dysfunctional organization. But four and a half years is enough time to have built a robust crew screening system. It is enough time to have published a transparent mental health framework. It is enough time to have learned from Ahmedabad and implemented visible, measurable changes. None of that has happened. At least not publicly. And in aviation, if it is not public, it does not build trust.

Other airlines take this seriously. Lufthansa overhauled its entire pilot mental health program after the Germanwings crash in 2015. It introduced peer support networks, psychological evaluations, and a culture where seeking help was not career-ending. That crash killed 150 people. It forced an industry-wide reckoning with cockpit mental health. Air India lost 260 people in Ahmedabad and has shared nothing.

Air India's response to the marijuana report was a masterclass in corporate deflection: "Air India undertakes regular drug testing of crew members in compliance with civil aviation regulations, independent of any specific flight or operational incident." Read that again. It says nothing. It confirms nothing. It addresses nothing. It is the institutional equivalent of "no comment" dressed in compliance language.

The DGCA needs to mandate and publish the results of a comprehensive audit of Air India's crew screening protocols. Air India needs to release whatever it knows about the Ahmedabad pilot's mental health history and what systemic changes it has made since. And the flying public needs to know that the person in the left seat of their aircraft has been screened not just for a valid license but for the fitness to hold 200 lives in their hands.
