This is Aaron Bushnell, a 25-year-old active duty service member in the US military… and a precious child of God. Last night he set himself on fire outside the Israeli embassy in Washington DC as an act of protest against the genocide in Gaza. Among his last words were: “Free Palestine.” He died as a result of his injuries.

I am moved by his conviction and his anger, but grieved by the loss of his life.

My heart goes out to all who loved him. I wish he was still alive. I pray other soldiers and veterans… and more of us in general… will find ways to courageously voice our compassion and dissent, but without any more loss of life.

We need more soldiers with a conscience to raise their voices, but more death will not heal the wounds of war. Let’s do all we can to support soldiers who become conscientious objectors, all those who stand against the war in Gaza, and all those who refuse orders that violate their faith and conscience.
