“Chemical weapons are serious, and the risk of exposure is immense, both immediate and potential long-term health consequences for those chemicals being in the air, in our soil, on the grass, in the environment around the school,” said Multnomah County Commissioner @SMeieran
Press conference at K-8 Cottonwood charter school:
Just a few steps away ICE has been using tear gas against protestors almost regular, munitions have been found in the school playground for months
This is Sharon Meieran, Multnomah County Commissioner
Let me say clearly: school should be a chemical weapon free zone. Tear gas is banned in war - it definitely shouldn’t be sprayed all over a school playground. Toxic contamination has made reopening the school harder and could have serious health impacts on children and staff.
Today parents at Cottonwood School hosted a rally, calling on officials to address the contamination of their playground. It's been 10 weeks since they asked @DHSgov to stop using chemical weapons (pictured) by their school. DHS has not responded - this is unacceptable.
I join @CSCSparents to demand an end to the use of chemical weapons near their school and I stand in solidarity with those working to stop ICE’s abuses and create a safer, more just, and more humane immigration system. #orleg#orpol
Today is our first day back to school in over a year but the playground is contaminated and closed. Kids need to be able to play safely outside. Parents are having a rally at 4 pm today to say - SCHOOL SHOULD BE A CHEMICAL WEAPON FREE ZONE.
