Today, I chaired a consultative meeting of the steering team of the Gusii Education Stakeholders Convention, at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development, Nairobi.
The Convention, bringing together key education stakeholders from the public and private sectors, will seek to enhance educational outcomes in the region and beyond by deliberating strategies for infrastructure improvement, enhancing performance standards and promoting teacher welfare, among others, across all levels of learning.
Last night, a regrettable fire tragedy befell Utumishi Girls Academy in Nakuru County. Most unfortunately, sixteen learners lost their lives while several others suffered injuries in the incident.
On behalf of the Ministry of Education and on my own behalf, I wish to convey our heartfelt condolences to the families, friends and relatives of the learners who lost their lives in this sorrowful incident. We wish a quick recovery to those who were injured. We pray that God grants everyone strength and fortitude during this difficult and painful period.
A multi-agency team, comprising officers from the Ministries of Education, Interior and National Administration, Gender, Culture and Children Services and the County Government of Nakuru, are working together to offer emergency support services. Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing and updates will be provided in due course.
