CU Geology prepares students for great careers in geoscience, tackling some of society's big needs. Posts by Dr. Kuehn on CU news & general earth/space science.
Small local WV earthquake picked up on the Raspberry Shake at Concord University on Monday. Magnitude 2.5 according to the USGS. It just shows up over the background noise, but the P, S, and surface waves can all be picked out.
Now posted on YT an excellent presentation about volcano science, navigating college and graduate school, and pathways to a science career

That big earthquake in Kamchatka really stands out on the Raspberry shake seismograph at Concord University. Not surprising for such a large event. It's the biggest earthquake since the 2011 magnitude 9.1 in Japan.

Milton is forecast to be a major hurricane when it reaches the west coast of the Florida Peninsula midweek. Do not focus on the details of the forecast. There is still significant uncertainty in the eventual track and intensity of #Milton.
While it is too soon to specify the exact magnitude and location of the greatest impacts, there is an increasing risk of life-threatening storm surge and damaging winds for portions of the west coast of the Florida Peninsula beginning early Wednesday. Residents in the Florida Peninsula should follow any advice given by local officials and monitor updates to the forecast.
Areas of heavy rainfall will impact portions of Florida through Monday well ahead of Milton, with heavy rainfall more directly related to Milton expected on Tuesday through Wednesday night. This rainfall will bring the risk of considerable flash, urban, and areal
flooding, along with the potential for moderate to major river flooding.

Itβs quite possible the worst of the damage has yet to be documented / reported in rural western NC. Helene will be remembered as one of the most devastating storms of the modern era. Many places have been geographically altered & the rebuilding process will take a lifetime.
Hurricane #Helene as seen from @NOAASatellites GOES-East (#GOES16) just before making landfall in Florida on Thursday 9/26/2024 as a Cat4! Helene has been a devastating storm causing wind damage, continued catastrophic flooding, power outages, and at least 52 deaths in 5 states.
This shatters my heart. God bless the EMS personnel who left everything on the ground and moved sick and elderly to the roof by hand to save their lives.
πErwin, TN
Erwin, TN, has been devastated by the flooding from Helene. Interstate 26 washed away near exit 40. My heart hurts tonight. I've made some of my favorite hiking memories in the hills of East Tennessee.
