@IpBonaventure is presenting #GALLOP2 at #ESOC2026 — a multicenter randomized trial evaluating semaglutide in acute large vessel occlusion stroke treated with EVT.
The study highlights a potential new neuroprotective strategy for severe stroke.

Breakthrough: @CUHKMedicine & @CUHK_GCNI show the weight loss drug GLP-1RA can counteract key hallmarks of ageing across multiple organs—including the brain & the heart—and may aid stroke recovery! Semaglutide led to 20% more patients achieving better neuro recovery after severe stroke (without IV thrombolysis) vs. standard therapy. Findings published in Cell Metabolism & Nature Communications, learn more on @cellmetabolism and @naturecommunication.
Semaglutide appears to be an effective adjunct to thrombectomy in LVO stroke patients not receiving thrombolytics, demonstrating improved functional outcomes as well as comparable mortality and sICH rates vs standard care in the GALLOP-2 trial

We are delighted to share that Professor Carol Cheung (@CarolCheung1023) , Dr Owen Ko (@shibadaddo) and Professor Vincent Mok (@VincentCTMok) from @CUHKMedicine have recently received the #Best Use of AI Award and the #Smart People (Smart Ageing) Silver Award of #2025 Hong Kong ICT Awards for i-Cog Brain Health, the world’s first #AI-powered #retinal imaging analytic algorithm for screening Alzheimer's dementia and evaluating brain health within a few minutes.
A breakthrough study by the School of Life Sciences and the Gerald Choa Neuroscience Institute at CUHK has revealed for the first time that hormonal imbalance during women’s perimenopausal period affects brain cell energy metabolism, significantly increasing the risk of Alzheimer’s disease (AD).
During perimenopause, fluctuations in the female hormones oestradiol (E2) and progesterone (P4) often lead to oestrogen dominance, where E2 remains high while P4 is insufficient. This not only weakens the energy production efficiency of neurons but also exacerbates brain cell energy imbalance. This can trigger toxic reactions from neuronal over-excitation, leading to the collapse of energy metabolism and apoptosis, or cell death, ultimately increasing the risk of pathological features associated with AD. This discovery offers a new direction for the early prevention of neurodegeneration in women.
