As global interest in lunar exploration grows, a CUHK-UCLA study offers a compelling new perspective: the Moon may be far more dynamic than previously believed.
Researchers found that volcanic glass beads from Apollo 17 – formed billions of years ago – continued releasing gases beneath the Moon’s surface for years. Insulated by lunar soil, these beads cooled slowly over time, revealing a prolonged, almost “breathing” rhythm.
This discovery not only provides new insights into the Moon’s interior and volatile cycle, but also highlights how revisiting old samples with new techniques can lead to new discoveries – including a potential contribution to the formation of polar ice.
