Hot take:
Coaches absolutely have favorites, even if you don’t think you do.
The favorites are the players who:
✅ Show up
✅ Do things right
✅ Take coaching
✅ Put the team first
✅ Can be trusted
✅ Have great effort
Every coach has favorites. They’re called dependable players.
Loyalty is the cornerstone of a strong staff.
You may disagree, engage in spirited debates, and even get into it when game planning or making key decisions as a staff.
But when we walk out the door, you better have each other’s backs.
Nothing kills a staff more than the inability to address issues with one another and support the vision of the program and the TEAM. It’s not about you. There is no person more important than the TEAM.
One of the best reads for a leader is “The Let Them Theory” by Mel Robbins.
One of the biggest takeaways for a football coach (or anybody)…
Not everyone will agree with your decisions. Not everyone will understand the vision, and that’s ok.
You can’t control every opinion. Continue to lead with conviction.
Let them.
The best coaching staffs I’ve been around had this in common:
They genuinely liked being around each other. They could laugh together, hang out together, and talk football for hours.
Yet they still respectfully disagree in a meeting and then walk out aligned. That kind of trust matters, and it’s not easy to build. It takes time and effort.
CV Strength Record boards & bulletin boards updated (May 2026). Weight room updated / refurbished and ready for a great summer / fall of explosive strength training. @CVHSYotes
CV Physical Education Dept. “Soles 4 Souls” shoe drive was a huge success. A truckload (approx. 2,000) shoes were collected & donated to others in need in our community. So thankful for our CV students / staff / community for always SERVING OTHERS in need. @CVHSYotes
Growth requires that you get uncomfortable, that you be vulnerable, that you risk failure. Pursuing comfort may feel great today but it will ultimately hold you back from your potential.
Lean in, believe in yourself, do the work.
Nick Saban delivers a lecture on the importance of nothing and why you're entitled to exactly that.
"You get up every day, you're entitled to nothing. Nobody owes you nothing."
"You could have talent, but if you don't have discipline, and you don't execute, you don't focus - what do you get? Nothing."
"If you're complacent and not paying attention to detail, what does that get you? Nothing."
Everything is earned.
"So nothing is acceptable but your best."
"Everything is determined by what you do and you trying to be your best so that you can build on positive performance."
The standard is simple.
It means show up, do the work, and earn it every day.

We got to see 32 teams in person from May 4-8. After a flurry of showcases the last 3 days delayed the publication of this story, @Mason_Byers5 breaks down what we saw and what to expect from those 32 teams in Week 3 of the spring ball report:

At 4 am this morning, as I laid in a deep slumber, I was called to action by my wife who had discovered a spider the size of a half dollar in the bathroom. Without hesitation I arose to combat the intruder. Claire handed me the slant board I’ve been using for rehab, and I immediately knew the spider had no chance. It took but 1 attempt to strike down my opponent. I received hugs and kisses for my bravery and fell back asleep with confidence. Have a day gentlemen. 🕷️
