In 2005, Ecuador exported 55 000 tons of cacao; in 2021, the country exported 400 000 tons, more than 10 times the production of the last 15 years. The increase in cacao production was the result of the adoption of the CCN51 variety.

Currently cacao is the Ecuador's leading agricultural crop. The productivity of CCN 51 cocoa motivated large, medium and small cacao farmers to adopt this variety.
