A few things in short stories that make me put something in the 'no' pile:
- passive voice
- lots of adverbs & adjectives
- opening w violence w no context (it's not interesting by itself)
- justifying rape or sexual assault anywhere in the story

While I was in Rwanda, I found out that Mutware (meaning "Chief") died in 2018 at 48. He had been brought up and rejected by humans and lived a solitary life ever after, often displaying violent behaviour. He was the inspiration behind my forthcoming story in the @Missouri_Review
Look at the last line of this poem. Not even dementia can make you forget it. I’m still mad that The Atlantic’s “The Best American Poetry of the 21st Century (So Far)” list doesn’t include any of Dean Young’s books. Great list, but no Dean Young? Come on, man.
the courage to allow things to get worse before they get better
applies to all sorts of domains:
- relationships (being fully honest in a way that may expose wounds, but also allow them to heal)
- creative projects (doing “bad” work because it’s what will eventually allow you to get better)
- emotions (turning towards your grief & fear, rather than running away from it)
this is essentially having a long time preference, but also means turning away from forcing/fixing/“need it now” to trust, abundance, unfolding
The more you study the Great Books, the more insane and unemployable you become. On the upside tho, you stop caring about those things around 5 years in. Instead, you care about pastries and local tap water quality.
