@graemelyons@SussexWildlife Had a brill' week in NE Scotland 2015 with Glenn @CalConLtd surveying sites like Culbin Sands/Forest, Morrich More, Den of Airlie etc. SSSI monitoring for @nature_scot. Entomology does not get much better than that.
@spidivercity @joaniemac17 @BritishSpiders@ScotWildlife@kattyponder@EdinburghNats I find spiders either:
1. Don't realise they're being handled (humans are so beyond many spiders' frame of reference for an animal).
Or
2. Don't like being handled & try to escape.
It's important to remember #spiders are very fragile and can burst & bleed to death if dropped.
Happy New Year's Eve, folks! 🥳
Here's to a brave new world, filled with new wonders, new possibilities, and new discoveries.
Excelsior!

We're really happy to announce we're supporting @GlasgowBusters again this year. This has enabled them to get super and hard-to-find stock in for coming events. Money raised goes to Glasgow Children's Hospital Charity. Check them out!

Brettus cingulatus female with brood (of 50+) on Days 2 & 3 after emerging from egg. This species has a special connection with my garden: it was first recorded from India from right here, by @curiocritters , Ahmed et al. 2017. 🧵

Senior Ecologist Euan Murray gets up close with a poplar hawk-moth (Laothoe populi), one of the largest #moths likely to be encountered in #Scotland (totally harmless). We're having fun with lots of moth surveys this year - why not get your own moth trap? #wildlife#entomology
@GlennNorris13@BerryTylan@graemelyons@BritishSpiders@SussexWildlife@Buzz_dont_tweet We found a male Araneus alsine at Flanders Moss using bugvac (vacuum sampling). The individual may have been searching for a mate of course. I (Chris Cathrine) wrote up a note on this for the BAS Newsletter - you can read it here: https://t.co/DxAzuPWsGb
A young jumping spider, Asemonea cf. tenuipes subadult male, with some odd roommates. He's constructed his sheet-like shelter to enclose a mealybug; and ants from a nearby colony have been coming in all day to collect honeydew from the bug.
