Rebuilding trust
We need a new approach to building trust in economic and monetary systems, says Ian Grigg, my guest on the latest episode of the New Money Review podcast.
Grigg, a computer scientist and cryptographer, is one of the pioneers of internet-based money.
Business school taught me all the wrong skills.
I learned to:
- Seek approval
- Speak in jargons
- Model things to death
- Framework for everything
Instead of doing, I'm analyzing life from the sidelines.
I highly recommend Vegard. He did a great job on our now rebranded website and at very short notice. He's calm, creative and very professional. What more could you ask...?
I build websites guys and theyโre pretty good. Should put up a portfolio ๐ผ. In the meantime open up my DMโs or send me a message on WhatsApp or email (all in bio), to get a great chat about your situation, some free advice and an offer on the spot.
Something happened to business software.
You used to pay for it once, install it, and run it. Whether on someoneโs computer, or a server for everyone, it felt like you owned it. And you did.
Today, most software is a service. Not owned, but rented. Buying it enters you into a perpetual landlordโtenant agreement. Every month you pay for essentially the same thing you had last month. And if you stop paying, the software stops working. Boom, youโre evicted.
For nearly two decades, the SaaS model benefitted landlords handsomely. With routine prayers โ and payers โ to the Church of Recurring Revenue, valuations shot to the moon on the backs of businesses subscribed at luxury prices for commodity services they had little control over.
Add up your SaaS subscriptions last year. You should own that shit by now.
SaaS still makes sense for many products, but its grip will slip. Installation and administration used to be hopelessly complicated, but selfโhosting tech is simpler now and vastly improved. Plus, IT departments are hungry to run their own IT again, tired of being subservient to Big Techโs reign clouds.
Once upon a time you owned what you paid for, you controlled what you depended on, and your privacy and security were your own business. Weย think itโs that time again.

Ancient empires can teach us a lot about modern business.
Here are 3 core lessons:
โฆ Build a diverse, multicultural team
โฆ Use influence over force to achieve goals
โฆ Foster loyalty through generosity and selflessness
"It's quite possible to earn a living while not being an abhorrent person. You can be ethical and still have financial stability. I wish more people could understand that."
What if 51% of the population thought this way?
