Kwame Ture Speaks on African Unity
In this excerpt from a 1992 lecture on Pan-Africanism and African unity at Florida International University, Miami, USA, political activist and revolutionary Kwame Ture (1941 โ 1998) speaks about what it means for Africans to be truly united, and how history offers important lessons about the way forward for the continent.
Kwame Ture (born Stokely Carmichael) was a Trinidadian-born, U.S-raised activist, who was a key figure in the Civil Rights and Black Power Movements in the United States, and a lifelong champion of Pan-Africanism. He was most notable in his later years as the chief organizer for the All-African Peopleโs Revolutionary Party (A-APRP), founded in the late 1960s by former Ghanaian President and Pan-Africanist icon Kwame Nkrumah (1909 - 1972) โ in whose honor Ture took on his new first name.
Tureโs thoughts are apt at a time when Africa faces โ for the first time in generations โ the threat of direct colonial occupation by Western powers, who are desperate to shore up their dwindling influence on a world that no longer believes in the fiction of Western superiority.
Some African nations, like Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso, see the coming storm for what it is, and are moving accordingly. It is left to the rest of the continent to follow suit.
