In 2003, Lionel Messi was a 16-year-old unknown in Barcelona's academy when Rangers manager Alex McLeish received a rather unusual tip-off about him. His son had been playing Championship Manager and kept raving about this kid.

McLeish actually called Barcelona to enquire. The response was firm. Messi was too young and the offer too small.

Then came the twist. Barcelona offered Andrés Iniesta as an alternative, and Rangers were seriously considering it, until Iniesta broke into the first team and the deal collapsed entirely.

Two of the greatest midfielders in football history nearly ended up in Scotland because of a video game. Incredible but true.
