CALM is a state-of-the-art microscopy facility supporting high quality scientific research and training, and promoting cross-disciplinary interactions.
Co-hosted by @BIMR_McMaster & @CalmMcmaster, this symposium will bring together researchers, industry experts, and clinicians to explore cutting-edge advancements in biomaterials, biofabrication, and regenerative medicine.
Registration and abstract submission for our upcoming MSC meeting in Winnipeg on June 9 - 12 are open! We are excited to host Prof Frances Ross from @MIT and Prof Yuval Garini @ygwatch from @TechnionLive as our invited speakers! More details: https://t.co/u8x9mWFu7h @um_research
Congratulations again to this year’s C2 Discover image competition! We look forward to seeing more of the wonderful microscopy being done at Mac next year!
In 3rd place of our Microscopy Competition, Yue Su (@Moran_MirabalRG ) takes the prize for her impressive confocal image of a cellulose aerogel, showing its 3D architecture and connecting pores. The aerogel is made of cellulose nanocrystals covalently labelled with Cy5.
Serial staining and imaging were achieved using the IBEX (iterative bleaching extends multiplexity) pipeline. Tiled images of multiple staining rounds were captured with a Zeiss LSM980 confocal microscope (20X/0.8) objective then registered and fused using HALO. Congrats Megan!
Congratulations Megan Vierhout on winning 2nd place for her stunning confocal image of a precision-cut lung slice! The tissue was exposed to a cocktail treatment to stimulate a disease-like environment and 6 different immune cell markers were visualized using IBEX @MacImmunology
Aidee Arizpe Tafoya wins 1st place @aideearizpe@Moran_MirabalRG with a beautiful image of human lung fibroblasts that have been cultured on a hydrogel tissue model, where the expression of F-actin (yellow) and α-SMA (magenta) suggests their differentiation into myofibroblasts.
This image was taken with an inverted line scanning confocal microscope (Nikon A1R) using a 40X/1.25 water-immersion objective. Congratulations on winning first place, Aidee!
The final results for our 2024 C2Discover Microscopy Competition are in! We would like to thank the jury panel and everyone who participated in the public vote for helping us choose the winners, and a huge thanks to all the students who shared their stunning microscopy images!

Our 50th anniversary meeting is off to an amazing start with our plenary speaker, Dr. James Weaver, presenting their work on the imaging of biological architectures and 3D-printing of biologically-inspired structures. Thank you for the fascinating images and 3D models!
A HUGE thanks to @NikonInst, Ryan Belowitz, the School of Interdisciplinary Science, @ltsmcmaster, Julia Ungureanu and @Moran_MirabalRG for volunteering their time and providing us with the microscopes, space and very cool samples that made this a fantastic outreach event!
Earlier this week we had the great pleasure of receiving students from @MMRobinsonHS for some fun microscopy activities! We looked at all sorts of samples that ranged from individual cells and their organelles, to tissue sections and whole organisms.
Good morning McMaster community! Today we are thrilled to welcome many of you at the Biomaterials and Biofabrication for Regenerative Medicine Applications Symposium day in the Alumni Great Hall, co-organized with @CalmMcmaster.
Friday April 19 at 2.30pm, as part of our seminar series co-organized with @CalmMcmaster: Dr. Tengteng (Toni) Tang from @MSE_McMaster, will present her work on Advancements in 3D Electron Microscopy for Insight into Vertebrate Tissue Biomineralization.
