For years, we've emphasised strength training for older adults—and whilst strength matters, it's not the full story.
Here's what the research shows: Muscle POWER declines faster than strength as we age. And critically, power is a stronger predictor of functional decline, falls, and mortality than strength alone.
Think about it: getting up from a chair, catching yourself from a fall, climbing stairs—these all require the ability to generate force quickly, not just the ability to lift heavy.
Power = Force × Velocity
Yet only 22.8% of adults meet muscle-strengthening guidelines, and even fewer train for power.
The solution? Progress beyond traditional strength training. Incorporate velocity intent, explosive movements, and dynamic exercises into programmes for older adults.
The goal isn't just to be strong—it's to be functionally powerful and independent for life.

Junior doctors start their careers on £29,384.
There is not a single Conservative MP who would be prepared to do their jobs for that salary.
If we’re not careful there won’t be a single junior doctor who is prepared to do so either.
I remember seeing news footage of Nigel Farage’s Brexit march consisting of about 30 bellends and a whippet…
But no British news coverage of this incredible strike action from yesterday:
Just published: “Physiotherapy treatment for reverse total shoulder arthroplasty: results of a patient-centred rehabilitation guideline using functional and patient-reported outcome measures” #ULTRA

@KMiddletonCSP I work in a GP practice and two of the reception staff were in tears because of patient abuse yesterday. The narrative in the media at the moment is so damaging
