One of the many reasons I left NRM was the whole idea that you're not allowed to think for yourself. I would often make posts criticizing government dysfunction and corruption, and then my inbox would be flooded with messages asking why I’m fighting the government!

If for instance there was a corruption scandal involving some NRM bigwig and the opposition was up in arms against that person, you were expected to defend that person no matter how much loss or damage the person had caused.

Surprisingly, once Gen. Museveni ordered for the investigation of that person or took some action against them, you were expected to immediately shift goalposts and condemn him or her. If you continued defending that person after Museveni had spoken, you would be branded a traitor - ekipinga. Likewise, if you went to public hospitals and talked about the terrible conditions there, you were branded opposition. If Gen. Museveni came out and said the same thing, they would clap hands and nod in approval. So I asked, "What is my head for if I am not expected to make a judgment call on what is wrong or right?"

Sadly, that behavior has persisted up to now or even gotten worse. You all saw how NRM apologists were on these streets defending Anita Among despite all the evidence of grand corruption. But when the system turned on her, they joined the chorus of those condemning her. Seamlessly. Shamelessly!

I shuddered yesterday when I saw the number of apologists defending the shootings in Kisekka market. I'm sure if Museveni issues a statement today condemning that behavior, you will see how they instantly pivot and join in the condemnation. Suddenly, they will be "deeply disgusted" by these unpatriotic actions that harm peace, security, and tourism.

So, what is the purpose of having a brain if you can’t use it to think for yourself and discern what is right or wrong?

Just last week, regime apologists were questioning the decision of the US to place Uganda on Level 4 Do Not Travel Advisory! We LOVE OUR COUNTRY, but those who rule over us are the enemies of our country. See this video and you may think you're watching a scene from a war front. But this is Kisekka Market, in the middle of our capital. How do you persuade people to visit a country that behaves in this manner? Heavily armed thugs in plain clothes terrorising people in broad daylight! No wonder ordinary people thought they were armed robbers! And yet, these are the regime operatives who have been given the licence to terrorise, abduct and murder without consequence. How can ordinary citizens distinguish between criminals and security operatives when there's no difference in how they conduct themselves? We must all aspire to build a country where security forces behave with utmost professionalism.

Disappearances are okay, until your own will be disappeared - which can be any time. Whether the disappeared people have a case or not is not the only issue here. The normalisation of the METHOD should concern everyone.

Regime operatives disguise themselves and commit heinous crimes against us, convinced that the world will simply move on and forget them. Take, for instance, this thug DRAKESON MUHIMBURA, a military officer.

Under police and military protection, Muhimbura led the gang that savagely attacked and grievously wounded us during our presidential campaign in Gulu last year. He thought his identity would remain a mystery forever only for one of his fellow thugs to casually blow his cover! Muhimbura is now desperately begging for the post to be deleted!

For someone to see a person in Lukwago’s shape, explaining such sicknesses on camera and pleading for treatment, and still not be touched or moved to respond like a normal human being … Not only Lukwago, but many others. Mothers, wives, children, husbands crying for their loved ones… It is clear that some of the people in relevant positions of authority could actually be suffering mental health issues. The problem seems bigger, and can’t be solved by pleading to them.

We are dealing with people with apparent Sadistic Personality Disorder (SPD), to whom no appeal to empathy can work. When you cry or mourn, you are increasing their joy. The bigger danger is that no one is safe from a person with such a disorder. They’ll always create a reason to harm someone in order to get some satisfaction. It can be anyone else tomorrow. There is actually a lot of literature to show that many dictators in history were suffering from mental disorders, and society had to pay.

In my village, Butozi. Has it ever happened to you? You go to report a misbehaving child to the parents (Chairman), so that they discipline him. The father stays in the bedroom, doesn’t come out. The following day he comes to your home and says: “I heard you have issues with my child, that he beats people on the village. Actually you should thank him, for he hasn’t killed them. Duncan, while this might be understood from the angle of fear and avoidance of danger to self, I don’t think it takes away moral responsibility. In ethics, we usually don’t make moral attribution where an actor lacks freedom or knowledge. But, from a consequentialist perspective, if we say there is no freedom in the magistrate’s act and therefore no moral responsibility, the wider moral implications are absurd. A person who steals out of fear of poverty is also morally cleared. Another who eliminates a colleague who is likely to take their job is also not culpable. The list goes on. Sometimes giving a semblance of lack of freedom is simply a pronouncement that ‘between my benefit and harming an innocent person, I choose my benefit’. It is a false dilemma projected in defence of weak consciences. Presenting facilitators of violence as helpless victims simply serves to motivate more into such performance.
