When mining companies say they can “put the landscape back” – don’t believe it.
Conservation photographer and caver Neil Silverwood shares his deep personal connection to the Denniston Plateau – and why this landscape must not be sacrificed.
The plateau is one of the most unique places in Aotearoa. It holds creeks, waterfalls, endemic species found nowhere else, and layers of our geological history. But a proposed 25-year coal mine would rip all of that out – and leave a toxic legacy behind.
For every truckload of coal, five more of rock would be removed. Entire ecosystems would be bulldozed. And the creeks that feed local villages could face a century of acid mine drainage.
There is no way to put that back. No way to remake ancient sandstone pavements. No way to bring back species we’ve only just discovered.
💔 The climate can’t afford more coal.
💰New Zealanders shouldn’t have to keep paying for mine clean-ups.
🌿 And the natural heritage of Aotearoa shouldn’t be up for sale.
We’ve stood up for Denniston before. It’s time to rise again.
