if European readers want to understand where Turkey is heading right now, look at what the Ankara prosecutor did yesterday.

they launched a criminal investigation into Ahmet Davutoğlu for insulting the president on social media.

for anyone outside Turkey who does not recognize the name, Davutoğlu was not an opposition activist. he was the Prime Minister of Turkey. he was the Foreign Minister. he was the chairman of Erdoğan's own ruling party. he was the man who sat in Brussels across from EU leaders to negotiate international treaties.

last month, Davutoğlu dissolved his political party and announced his complete retirement from politics. he walked away from public life entirely.

yet the state opened a criminal probe that carries up to four years in prison simply for posting criticism online.

look at the progression of the purge.

first, they jailed the Kurdish opposition. then, they locked up Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu in Silivri facing 2,300+ years and raided printing presses to seize his books. and now, prosecutors are chasing the regime's own former prime minister into retirement.

in a healthy democracy, former prime ministers give university lectures and write memoirs.

in Ankara, they get criminal subpoenas from the prosecutors they helped appoint.

this is the final stage of autocracy. when a system runs out of enemies to eliminate, the machine turns inward and starts eating its own architects.

and while the state prosecutes its own former prime minister for tweets, European leaders still land in Ankara, smile for the cameras, and pretend Turkey is a normal partner.

you cannot negotiate stability with a regime so paranoid it is terrified of its own retired founders.
