Pueblo San Cristóbal — Lamy, New Mexico, 35°22'50.37"N, 105°50'41.49"W

A stone city in the desert.

This is Pueblo San Cristóbal, tucked into New Mexico's Galisteo Basin along a rare year-round stream. Its builders did something unusual for the region: they built in stone, not adobe. When archaeologist Nels C. Nelson excavated the site in 1912, he mapped the whole layout in detail — one of the earliest and most thorough pueblo surveys ever made.

1,645 rooms. Eleven plazas. A shrine, a reservoir, six middens — and walls built to last.

In 1617 Spanish missionaries arrived and built a church here. Parts of it still stand, walls reaching nearly 13 feet high. The pueblo was already fading by then — but its people weren't done. They joined the Pueblo Revolt of 1680, the uprising that pushed Spanish colonizers out of New Mexico entirely. San Cristóbal was abandoned soon after.

The surrounding cliffs hold hundreds of petroglyphs, some Archaic, some Puebloan — making this one of the richest rock art sites in the Southwest. There's even a stone aqueduct that once carried irrigation water across the arroyo.

A city built to last in a landscape that remembers everything.

@nmlinguaphile i've been by there a couple times but i didn't know the history of that Pueblo. i think i found the site of the spring - a precious thing in that dry land.

This is why the DOJ is suing Albuquerque Public Schools. But know that Las Cruces Public Schools was allowing this even before they passed Reg JBD-R in 2022 (we know from substitute teacher reports). What happened to the Integrity of Las Cruces Public Schools?
