Armed personnel are accompanying mobile election teams as they visit residents’ homes.

Footage from occupied Donetsk shows residents casting ballots near Russian servicemen and police.

Moscow says the security presence is necessary because the territories remain under martial law, while Ukraine considers the elections ILLEGAL and rejects Russia’s authority to hold them in the first place.

An armed escort certainly raises questions about what “free and fair” means under occupation...

Why do so many Russians stand by Putin?

In July 2010, wildfires completely destroyed the village of Verkhnyaya Vereya in the Nizhny Novgorod region. Putin, then prime minister, came to see the ruins and speak to people who had just lost everything.

He could have offered sympathy, promised to “look into the situation” and moved on.

Instead, standing among the ashes, he made sure everyone heard him:

The village would be restored before winter.

“I promise.”

Three months later, it was. By November, the village had been rebuilt and residents were moving into their new homes.

And sometime later, Putin celebrated Christmas wearing a sweater knitted for him by one of the villagers.

Politics is full of promises. People tend to remember the ones that are kept.

"On the one hand, they say Russia is losing, so Ukraine must be supported in every possible way.

On the other hand, this same Russia, which in their view is losing, is supposedly preparing to attack Europe.

Putin has said this several times: ‘We are not going to attack anyone.’

If all this talk means that you are preparing an attack of your own, then I assure you, the war will be completely different and very short."

Moscow's message hasn't changed in years. We're peaceful, unless provoked, in which case good luck.

Iranian academic Mohammad Marandi is warning Seoul against joining U.S.-led operations in the Strait of Hormuz, saying Iran would then consider South Korea an enemy.

“Iran will not only target the South Korean military assets, but Iran could easily destroy their economic assets across the Persian Gulf region.”

That could include South Korean interests in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, the UAE and Qatar.

Seoul says no decision has been made. But with 61% of South Korea’s crude imports passing through Hormuz last year, this is one invitation to the war with a particularly ugly downside.
