Ray’s Rock - Omaha Beach
On the morning of June 6, 1944, 23 year old Staff Sergeant Arnold “Ray” Lambert came ashore with the first wave of the 1st Infantry Division on the eastern side of Omaha Beach. At this small patch of concrete he saved nearly 20 lives:
The division came under intense fire from several German bunkers surrounding the entrance to the Colville Draw (one of two exits off Omaha Beach). Ray, a medic, immediately went to work.
He was shot in the arm. Moments later he was hit by shrapnel in the leg, but Ray kept pulling men to safety. He pulled nearly 20 wounded soldiers to cover behind this 8ft wide obstacle, treating each soldier before going out in search of others.
After several hours under fire, while pulling a wounded soldier from the ocean, he was struck by a landing craft. It dropped its ramp on top of him, breaking his back. He fell face down in the water, drowning. The craft backed up and nearby soldiers pulled an unconscious Ray to safety, eventually evacuating him off the beach.
Remarkably, Ray had already earned two Silver Stars and three Purple Hearts in Sicily and North Africa, prior to landing in France. But here in Normandy his war would end.
He awoke in a hospital back in England a day later. In the next bed over was his brother, who had also been wounded at Omaha.
When asked about his work on D-Day, Ray simply said, “I did what I was called to do.”
Ray Lambert passed in 2021 at 100 years old. He exemplified the best of American grit and why remembering this day is so important.
Cancer therapy #6 in the books! The blood test results are all improving and I got the green light for the Alaska cruise in a little more than 2 weeks. The oncologist’s advice: “please travel and enjoy life”. That’s what I’ll do.
Get busy living!!!
🎥 Jeff Hafley on Quinn Ewers: "I want Quinn to continue to get better and battle, and compete and do everything to show us he's the best QB on the field... I'm really pleased with him right now." (@MiamiDolphins) #PhinsUp
🎥 Jeff Hafley on Chop Robinson: "I'm looking for a lot more from Chop... he needs to become a complete footballer player going into year 3 and we have high expectations for him." (@MiamiDolphins) #PhinsUp
@bamaperspective I’m more disappointed with the response in the second game. The energy and looks on their faces made it feel like a 1-0 game was insurmountable. Thats where my disappointment lies.
Dolphins OTA June 2 recap:
Malik Willis’ first pass of the day was picked off by Juju Brents, but he was sharp from there.
A handful of completions to the intermediate part of the field on time and on target. Willis had a couple of completions to Malik Washington for chunks and a pretty big gainer to Jalen Tolbert. Kevin Coleman caught a crosser from Malik that might’ve gotten out the gate – gain of at least 20.
Jordan Phillips had a pair of TFLs in the opening period. He continues to be a force inside.
The defense did some blitzing and I thought the OL had a lot of success picking them up. Jonah Savaiinaea had a good day for my money. He looked patient in his sets and punches and was getting things sorted.
Patrick Paul and Kadyn Proctor cleared lanes on back-to-back reps for Ollie Gordon. They displaced the LOS and Gordon had 3 yards of runway before meeting any defenders. Thought Salyer and Heck had some nice vertical displacement in the run game, too.
Willie Gay’s second-level speed jumps off the field to me. He’s so quick to get out wide on quick throws to the perimeter and tag off.
Trey Moore showed the goods when he matched Dulcich step for step on a ball down the middle for about 20 yards, scored the breakup.
Chris Johnson had a beautiful break up against Tolbert on a good deep ball from Willis. Tolbert got on top, Johnson got back in phase, ball got in there, but CJ was able to punch it free at the last second.
Plenty more to come on the podcast tonight.
@LeviB824@buildth3DAM Because those teams busted their ass to win a regional they technically weren’t supposed to by beating a national seed. So they are awarded to opportunity to host. Why would you take that away from them that’s madness and rigging the field for power schools.
@GreenBaseUSM Insane to me a lot of state fans think it’d be fair to take Troy’s opportunity to host a super away from them after they busted their ass to get there just because State’s stadium is one of the nicest in the country.
@hunter_king1994@tru_maroon Troy busted their ass to win a regional and you think you should just take that from them because you want more home games at your field?Thats insanity.Everyone knows trust me yall don’t let us forget how nice your stadium is but that shouldnt mean they dont get this opportunity
