The year was 2014 and my life was going nowhere. I had a lot of tax debt and I couldn’t see any way of digging myself out of it.
I found Bitcoin and instantly knew it was the only thing that could free me from what I’d gotten myself into and potentially even provide me with the financial freedom I’d need to have my own family one day, Something I’d dismissed as impossible long ago. I spent every waking moment going deeper and deeper down the rabbit hole.
I had an overwhelming urge to share my new found obsession with anyone who’d listen but my friends and family couldn’t care less.
I was lonely, Everyone I knew told me that Bitcoin was a scam.
I went on for over a year craving a sense of community, belonging and comradely when I stumbled upon this video on YouTube: https://t.co/SxHggZvgAt
I’d finally found it, WhaleClub! A group of people who were just as obsessed as me. 24/7 crypto voice chat. I knew I needed IN!
I downloaded the software, Joined the channel and sat for a minute listening to everyone talk. This place was PACKED. People were talking about price action, fundamentals, trading strategies and setups, People were posting charts, There was debate and it got really heated. This place was incredible.
I was super nervous and uncomfortable about holding down my push to talk button and saying my first words for all to hear. I’d spent the better part of 2 years learning everything I could about the space and in my own little bubble; I was an expert but listening to these people talk for only a few minutes I knew that I was no expert. I was a pretender and scared that everyone else would know it too but I wasn’t going to let that get in the way of being a part of this community.
I wanted to sound smart, I wanted people to like me, I wanted the community to see me as someone who could provide value and I knew it was going to a case of “Fake it till you make it” so I took a deep breath, pushed down my button and started talking.
Everyone embraced me with open arms and I immediately felt at home until this one guy took issue with something I had said. His name was Swapman and before I knew it, I’d gone from feeling like I was with my new best friends to getting insulted, talked down to and feeling like I was about 2 inches tall.
I left Whale Club that day feeling a bit down about it all and I didn’t know if I’d go back again because doing so would mean I’d be confronted with how little I ACTUALLY knew about anything.
The next day I decided to that I’d just go back to listen. I didn’t have to talk and be the centre of attention, I could just sit back, take it all in and learn what ever I could.
When I connected I was sent a private message from Swapman. He wanted to apologise for how we’d ended our last conversation and let me know he’d had a pretty rough day, Was looking for someone to blame and I was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Swapman made me feel completely at ease and I learned something about the community. Things can get extremely heated, People have good days and bad days but this place was unlike any other. The volatility of crypto was extreme and so were the emotions of the people who traded it. Every day was a new day and it didn’t matter how things were yesterday and what was said because we were all in it together. We felt every exhilarating high and every devastating low as a group and we all knew something that the rest of the world didn’t, We knew the potential of Bitcoin and how it could change our lives forever, All you had to do was play it right.
As time went on and the user base changed so did the leadership. Whale Club became Stakepool and Stakepool became Whalepool and thats where our little group has been gathering for as long as I can remember.
My Bitcoin investments paid off. I was able to settle all of my tax debt buy a nice house. That family I was hoping to have at the beginning of this story? Well we’ve got a beautiful little daughter who’s almost two and five months ago, We welcomed two amazing twin boys into the world.
Life has changed a lot for me since I found the band of autists, Miss fits and dreamers that I call my best friends in (What we now call) Whalepool.
It sounds so cliche to say this but I know that I wouldn’t have any of the good that I have today without each and every one of the people that have hung out on Whalepool over the last decade and I’m not just talking about finances. You guys changed the way I think about everything, You helped to shape me into the person I am today and while everyone played a part in that, It was one man who played the biggest part in it.
I learned so much from Swapman and it feels strange to say this about someone who I’ve never even met in real life but your generosity, your friendship, your advice and your brilliance have shaped so many of us and I feel privileged that I got to be part of your existence and that you got to be a part of mine.
Just before we lost Swapman, My family went out so I could get a bit of time to myself and I spent all of that time sitting in my backyard with my laptop talking to Swapman and a couple of the other guys, for three hours we talked about life, death and the people who helped shape our community, I had no idea that it would be the last time I’d ever get the privilege of talking to you my friend.
The first time we met, You told me I was in the wrong place at the wrong time but last Wednesday? I was in the right place at the right time and I’ll be forever thankful to get that last little bit of time with you, Someone who I respected so much.
Rest easy my friend, I’ll catch you on the other side.
@austerity_sucks@whalepool
@emubrigadier@GrahamY Let’s do the ACTUAL math.
Nurse earns 66k/yr over 15yrs and pays ~$180K tax on her $1mil total
Bitcoiner books $1mil gain after 15 years and pays >$200k with 50% CGT discount and $400k without.
Same 1m, same 15yrs & Investor pays more!
No one’s paying 5k tax on 100k gain bro
@scottmelker@Tradermayne Why do people think this.
While it’s true that Saylor’s buying the Bitcoin, He’s doing it on behalf of the investors who are giving him money to do so.
Saylor’s got the charisma of a stick, It’s not his winning smile that’s getting people to buy. Without him, They’d still buy!
@MatttDavey@girl_wild95331 It was so refreshing to watch a PM not just answer the actual question that was asked but talk about it with knowledge and understanding.
I can't remember the last time I've seen anything like it.
@MyFirstCousin White Anglo Saxon here, I pay annual tax bills so large it'd make you absolutely sick!
I'm happy to pay for Pauline's salary.
She's EXACTLY who we need to fix this joint and end the free ride enjoyed by so many freeloaders.
It's COMING and I can't WAIT!
@MatttDavey@girl_wild95331 You could tell that Albo had that whole football speech prepared in the hopes that after he was finished; They could just move on to a different question. I'm SO happy the NZ PM actually answered the question. GOLD!
@AvidCommentator@GrayConnolly I always thought it was our resources which were our strength. I never got how diversity could be a strength or a weakness... It just IS...
@vegosrock@AlboMP@chrisluxonmp Just because you pay tax doesn’t mean you’re a contributor
Take the annual budget and divide it by the people who are able to work. It’s 70k per person per year.
If you’re not paying more than that you’re being subsidized by people who are, People like me.
The free ride’s OVER
@vegosrock@AlboMP@chrisluxonmp What whinging or wining are you even talking about pleb?
Your whole existence is funded by people like me. Be grateful that I’ve paid every cent of tax I’ve ever owed because it’s what allows you to live the way you do
Be warned. We’ll be fighting for you to pay your fair share
@vegosrock@AlboMP@chrisluxonmp I paid a million in tax when I sold assets to buy my house. I expect a return on my investment.
Me and my people aren’t just needed, We’re critical.
You and yours are leaches and are replaceable.
Do Australia a favor and just leave!
@vegosrock@AlboMP@chrisluxonmp You want me to move OS because I don’t want to further subsidize the services you want/need?
Makes more sense for you to leave.
Unlike those of us propping up this country, You’re replaceable!
There’s no shortage of poor people with their hand out who’ll take your place :)
@szissimos95@CraigSarg73 That's incorrect, This new system adjusts the cost base for inflation, Not the gain.
Maybe YOU should have a read.
The issue with adjusting the cost base for inflation is that it assumes there's a cost base to inflate.
When I sold assets to buy my house, My cost base was ZERO
@alreadyfurious@OMGTheMess I don’t want to speak for OP but this doesn’t sit right with me because I don’t want my tax dollars supporting someone’s 20x leveraged purchase that went against them.
I’d prefer for that person to just live an hour or two extra further out and drive in and out every day.
@szissimos95@CraigSarg73 I don’t need to read that
I’m directly affected by these changes and have never gone near the property ponzi.
Australias top CGT rate of 23.5% is already higher than COMMUNIST China’s 20% and Russia’s 22% and now they want to make it 47%
The Australian product ain’t worth it.
@szissimos95@CraigSarg73 Well I think (even in its current form) that One Nation would govern better than Labor.
They lost me with the CGT changes.
Call me what ever names you want but I’d still drink with you and that’s something a lot of us “righties” would be happy to do.
@szissimos95@CraigSarg73 Voter disillusionment?
Dude, just because voters think different to you doesn’t mean that.
That’s really undemocratic.
The voters vote based on who they think will be best for them and best for Australia. That’s it…
I guess we’ll see what happens between now and the election
@szissimos95@CraigSarg73 Like I said, They’re starting from scratch.
They’re polling very well considering they’re having to come up with all this stuff on the fly.
They’re a couple of months in to being serious contenders and they’re doing their best with limited resources.
@agnestar1985@AusBTCIndBody@ALeighMP That's around the time where I started selling.
I reckon I'd aged about 20 years in that 7 years haha.
Hold strong brother! Just remember. Don't listen to the cultish bullshit! There's no shame in enjoying the fruits of your hard work.
@agnestar1985@AusBTCIndBody@ALeighMP To be honest, When I first found Bitcoin, My goal was to pay off my debt. That was it...
I bought shortly after the 2013 highs and it dropped for years while all my mates laughed.
It wasn't until 2017 that I knew I'd be getting a lot more than just "debt free" :)
