“After having spent 40 years just absolutely anti-nuke, even including power plants, I have to say I’ve changed my mind.”

Amazing to see actor Michael Douglas publicly stating he change his views on nuclear energy.

Why is that a big deal?

In 1979 Douglas starred in and produced “The China Syndrome” a Hollywood thriller about a nuclear reactor accident.

The film depicts the plant operators as shady and even criminal, going to great lengths to cover up serious safety concerns at the plant.

It premiered just 12 days after the Three Mile Island disaster in Pensilvania, a nuclear reactor accident in the United States.

“The China Syndrome” played a tremendous role in cementing the public perception of nuclear energy as dangerous.

But times have changed. Nuclear reactors have proven to be a lot safer than people thought and we are facing much bigger problems.

As Michael Douglas alludes to in the interview, climate change wasn’t really a concern back then.

But as we grapple with the ever more visible impacts of it, even staunch anti-nuclear folks are giving nuclear energy a second look.

Hey folks, it’s not the 1970’s anymore. It’s ok to say you support nuclear energy.

Just a reminder that over 50% of voters in California were in favor of keeping Diablo Canyon open.

My prediction is that in about 5-10 years being anti-nuclear energy will be as bad of a look as being a climate denier.
